JUST IN: Microsoft is bringing AI to the news.

Plus, massive developments from Roblox, Apple, Bumble, Alibaba, Sam Altman, Bayreuth University, Huawei, and some wild deepfake scams.

Here's everything you need to know:
Microsoft just announced new partnerships with media orgs to provide AI tools for the newsroom.

AI will be used for research - with journalists still writing the articles (for now).

Outlets include Semafor, CUNY's journalism school, The GroundTruth Project, and more.
Roblox just launched a real-time AI chat translator.

Players speaking different languages can now seamlessly communicate via text in-game.

Pretty soon, every platform will likely have an AI system of its own — ending communication barriers as we know them.
Apple researchers just introduced a new method to help speech recognition models better comprehend unfamiliar words and names.

Looks like we may have a major (and much needed) Siri upgrade soon 👀 Image
Bumble launched a new AI-powered tool called Deception Detector.

The feature automatically identifies and blocks 95% of spam and fake profiles on the dating platform.

Take notes, Twitter. Image
Alibaba researchers released Qwen1.5, open-sourcing six different model sizes.

The performance reportedly surpasses GPT 3.5 + Mistral-Medium and even GPT 4 on certain benchmarks.

China's LLM competitors are getting serious.
Sam Altman posted that GPT-4's performance should be ramped up after its reported 'laziness' during the holidays.

Even AI struggles with New Year's resolutions:
Bayreuth University scientists are using AI to analyze galaxy structures and behaviors.

With how little we know about the universe, some new discoveries could get WILD. Image
Huawei is slowing its phone production — despite becoming China's leader in smartphone sales.

The reason? Prioritizing AI chips amid surging global demand.

Quite a statement on where the tech giant sees the future of AI heading. Image
AI deepfakes are all over the headlines. Two crazy new ones:

-OnlyFake, a site that leverages AI to create near-instant fake IDs.

-A $25.6M heist in Hong Kong, with scammers using deepfake tech to convince an employee to transfer funds.
6 new AI tools & 4 new jobs.

All the direct links will be included in my newsletter tomorrow.

🚨 Microsoft just dropped several upgrades to Copilot, including the ability to edit DALL-E 3 generated images.

Plus, more huge developments in AI from YouTube, Apple, Stability AI, OpenAI, Outtakes AI, and Elon Musk.

Here's EVERYTHING you need to know:
Microsoft just pushed new Copilot updates, including a visual makeover, inline image editing, and more.

The company also showed off its first Super Bowl ad in 4 years, putting AI center stage.

No mention of Bing though — the branding transition is real 👀
Here's a first look at Copilot's new in-line image editing feature.

It's pretty sweet to have the ability to change colors or blur backgrounds directly in the app, instead of generating with DALL-E, and making edits like this in Photoshop.

AI just deciphered a 2,000-year-old scroll!

Plus, major updates from Meta, Carnegie Melon, Stanford, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Tencent, and 8 new AI tools.

Here's EVERYTHING you need to know:
A $1M contest worked to extract text from scans of charred scrolls buried by Mt. Vesuvius' eruption in 79 A.D.

The winning AI algorithm revealed over 2,000 readable characters!

Tech like this is going to uncover/rewrite so much of history as we know it.
Meta is adding labels to AI images posted on FB, IG, and Threads over the next year using invisible watermarks and metadata.

The solutions are a step in the right direction...

But it still feels like an issue that is going to be near-impossible to tackle. Image

Google just rolled out huge AI upgrades across Bard, Google Maps, and Imagen-2.

Plus, huge developments in AI from Amazon, Sam Altman, Georgia Tech, Meta, Arc, and Anthropic.

Here's everything you need to know:
The first of Google's AI upgrades is Gemini Pro, now running on Bard.

Big improvement from the previous LaMDA and PaLM models.

This means Bard now has upgraded understanding, summarizing, reasoning, and coding capabilities.
Conversational search is coming to Google Maps.

New AI-powered results provide detailed information to help users discover new locations.

This ends the debate. Google Maps > Apple Maps.

It's not even close anymore.

OpenAI has quietly been rolling out a new feature in ChatGPT over the weekend.

Plus, huge developments in AI from Google Bard, Arc, X, Tesla, Apple iOS 17.4, and 8 new tools.

Here's everything you need to know:
OpenAI quietly shipped a new ‘GPT mentions’ feature to ChatGPT (no official announcement yet).

The feature allows users to integrate GPTs into a conversation by tagging them with an '@'.

It's slowly rolling out (I don't have access, but my team does 🙃)
Bard moved into second on the Chatbot Arena Leaderboard, surpassing GPT-4 and trailing only GPT-4 T.

Impressively, Bard only uses Gemini Pro, the middle tier of Google's LLMs.

The updates make me more excited than ever for the launch of Gemini Ultra.

Google just made an incredible AI video breakthrough with its latest diffusion model, Lumiere.

2024 is going to be a massive year for AI video, mark my words.

Here's what separates Lumiere from other AI video models:
Before we get into demos, a quick bit on the model's key differences.

Lumiere uses a "space-time" neural network to generate clips in a single pass, as opposed to other models that create distant keyframes.

Essentially, this avoids the ‘choppiness’ seen in other generations! Image
FEATURE 1: Video Editing

Lumiere can edit any specific portion of a video with a simple mask and prompt.

It's always insane to see demos like this — the potential applications are endless.
