Russia with new Svalbard threat:
- Very sharp wording
Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev, who is responsible for the country's Arctic policy, believes that Russian rights in Svalbard are under pressure - and draws a parallel to the war in Ukraine.
At a meeting in Moscow, Trutnev claimed that Russian rights on Svalbard are under pressure, and that Russia will not budge one step. A transcript from the so-called commission meeting has been posted on the government's website.
He then drew a parallel to the war in Ukraine
- Today our soldiers are sacrificing blood for the sovereignty of our country, and for people's right to speak Russian. I believe that our work in government in this area (Svalbard 🇳🇴) should be treated in the same way - as a fight for our sovereignty.
A fight for Russia and our rights, he said, according to the transcript
He also said that "I think everyone understands that this is also not the right time to work towards international cooperation
- Rather, humanity is entering a phase with a deeper level of conflict, he said
They also come days after Trutnev and Minister Alexei Chekunkov welcomed a group of men in military uniform, several with the insignia of a Russian Spetsnaz drone unit that has fought in Ukraine, and said they will draw on their combat experience in the Arctic
Russia has on several occasions expressed dissatisfaction with the Svalbard Treaty from 1920, which ensures Norway full and unrestricted sovereignty over Svalbard
The intelligence service writes in its recent threat report that Russia has a continuing interest in presence and activity on the archipelago, particularly with regard to the archipelago's location, natural resources and that russia seeks to be the dominant player in the Arctic.
(Imo: Svalbard is somewhat of an achielles to both Nato/USA and russia, and also an ideal place for russia to test NATO/Norway in a hybrid attack. I suspect that the attack on Nato will start here due to Svalbards strategic location, the nature of the Svalbard treaty ++)
