BOFIT Policy Brief 1/2024 @LSolanko: Where do Russia’s mobilized soldiers come from? Evidence from bank deposits
#Russia #regions #mobilization #warcasualties #bankdeposits (1/4) publications.bof.fi/handle/10024/5…
(2/4) On-year growth in household bank deposits skyrockets in late 2022, indicating that either consumption declined dramatically (it did not) or that households received unforeseen monetary incomes deposited in their bank accounts. urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi-fe2…
(3/4) The growth in bank deposits is driven by a small group of 15 regions that I call “mobilized”. These are mainly small, poor regions far away from Moscow. In these regions the normally positive correlation between average wages and bank deposits turns NEGATIVE after Feb 2022.
(4/4) The payments to mobilized and recruited soldiers seem to be a potential driver of these deposits. It seems that deposits may provide a proxy in examining where Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine come from and which regions have borne the most casualties in relative terms.
