Permit me a frustrated thread please.

I have been trying to get more insights into the £200k donation Vaughan Gething took from a company that also put in a request for a solar farm in Cardiff.

The evasion and entitlement on display is ridiculous.

Let me explain.

[Thread] Image
If you are new to this the details of the initial investigation are below.

You can't possibly read this and not think there are serious questions to answer.

But neither Mr Gething, or the many Welsh Labour politicians who support him will answer them?!

I have approached both VG and every Welsh Labour MP, MS and Council Leader who has declared support for him.

I am astounded by their responses. Let's start with the responses from Vaughan Gething himself.
When I approached Mr Gething’s campaign I asked them the following questions:

- Was he aware of the application when he accepted the donation?
- Now he is aware of it, will he be returning the donation?
- Does he think this could be perceived as a conflict of interest?
To this I got a very weak response. They simply said (taken from the Will Hayward Newsletter): Image
Now the eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that this doesn’t answer any of the questions I asked.

Of course, politicians will often be evasive but this response is pathetic.

His campaign also indicated VG was unaware of the application before he took the donation but this raises even more questions.
Yesterday I approached Mr Gething again and asked: Image
Again they responded by completely dodging what are perfectly legitimate questions. They said: Image
This is the election to choose the man who is going to be running our schools and hospitals.

He won’t be elected by the people of Wales to that position but rather by Labour members.

The very he can do is answer perfectly legitimate questions about donations that raise important questions.
But what about all the Labour politicians who support him?

They all went very quiet in the aftermath of story breaking on Monday.

Surely some of them will at least address these legitimate and serious questions? NOPE.
I approached all the MSs, MPs and council leaders who have declared their support for Mr Gething and asked them: Image
I approached all of the following MPs, council leaders and one lord:

Chris Bryant MP
Mark Tami MP
Nick Thomas-Symonds MP
Cllr Huw Thomas
Wayne David MP
Stephen Kinnock MP
Jess Morden MP
Stephen Doughty MP
Lord Murphy
Ruth Jones MP

Only Mark Tami replied saying: Image
On one hand, at least he replied. On the other, he didn’t address the issue.

As for the others, their refusal to respond is, imo, weak and pathetic.

They have publicly backed Mr Gething as the best man for the job, and now they can't even answer important questions around transparency?

I guarantee you they wouldn't be quiet if this was a Tory.
The Senedd Members sent me a joint statement where they also all completely ignored important questions regarding ethics and scrutiny.

The following statement was from Jayne Bryant MS (Campaign Co-Chair), Ken Skates MS (Campaign Co-Chair),Vikki Howells MS, Jack Sargeant MS, Hefin David MS, Joyce Watson, MS, Lynne Neagle MS, Dawn Bowden MS, Rebecca Evans MS:Image
Politicians utterly failing to front up to legitimate questions is what turns people off politics.

I repeat, imagine how they would howl and rage with indignation if it was the Tories doing this.
This inclination to refuse to answer legitimate questions from the very people who say that Wales and Welsh democracy should be respected is, IMO, hypocritical.

Refusing to engage is disrespecting Wales and the people who live here.
Rant over, please subscribe to my news letter where this story was broken.

It is actually quite good.

In my humble opinion.

EXCLUSIVE - Big Wales News

A company gave Vaughan Gething a huge donation to his campaign to be First Minister, the same day they also applied to build a large solar farm on a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Cardiff.

A development requiring Welsh Gov approval...
[Thread] Image
Let me take you through this step by step.

Vaughan Gething took the huge donation from Cardiff-based environmental firm Dauson Environmental Group to help him beat rival Jeremy Miles to be Welsh Labour leader and replace Mark Drakeford as First Minister.
The donation has been controversial because it is “eye-wateringly large” and because the company is run by a man who was prosecuted for illegally dumping waste on a conservation site.

There is a lot of strange things about the £200,000 donation Vaughan Gething has been given to help him beat Jeremy Miles to become First Minister.

Not least that the spending limit for each candidate is £44k....

There is however a loophole Mr Gething can exploit.

[THREAD] Image
In case you missed in Vaughan Gething received the £200k donation from a man prosecuted for illegally dumping waste on a conservation site.

Let me put into context just how big this donation is in terms of Welsh politics...
In the last Welsh Labour leadership contest, eventual winner Mark Drakeford only raised £25,000.

Mr Gething's rival Jeremy Miles has raised about £30,000.

In the whole of the last Senedd election, with close to 100 candidates, Welsh Labour only spent £500,000 in total.

I have been through every single donation received by Welsh MPs over the last year and there has been cash pouring into certain Tory seats ahead of the General Election.

One former Wales rugby captain gave £7.5K in one donation.

Let's go through and have look.

[Thread]
Starting with Craig Williams the MP for Montgomeryshire.

If the latest polls are to be believed this is potentially the only seat that the Conservatives will hold on to at the next General Election. Image
Poor Mr Williams could be the only Tory MP left in Cymru.

However Mr Williams is not poor when it comes to election campaigning given that he has received several sizable donations in the last 12 months.

Welsh farmers are currently FURIOUS with the Welsh Government.

They have some legitimate reasons to be p*ssed off but the WG are also in a really tricky position.

This is complex but really super important & hidden within the debate is a wonderful opportunity.

[THREAD] Image
The picture above (credit @GlynPreston) is from Welshpool Livestock Market.

It isn’t bulls, cows or sheep occupying the pens but something far harder to domesticate: Welsh farmers.

So why are they so mad with the Welsh Gov?
Well they are angry with lots of things atm including how Brexit has played out and treatment by supermarkets. But what is really getting their goat (or sheep) is the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS).

"WE CAN'T SORT THE WELSH NHS BECAUSE WESTMINSTER HAVE CUT OUR FUNDING"

This is the go-to Welsh Gov response to criticism of how they manage the health service.

But this ignores the fact they could simply manage it better.

Let me give you a really good example:

Let's take ambulance waits.

This graph shows how many hours of paramedic time are lost in Wales while they are waiting to hand over patients to A&E.

In December 2023 over 22k were lost because hospital ERs were too full to discharge.

Up from 5.3k in 2016. Image
To be clear, this is not an issue with the ambulance service.

They simply can’t hand over patients into A&E because hospitals are too full.

If you doubled the amount of paramedics and vehicles you would just end up with a longer queue outside of emergency rooms.

So I have been having a little look at the people who run some of the Welsh anti-20mph Facebook groups.

It seems that many of them a run by Tory politicians.... who live in England....and support 20mph where they live....

Let's go on a journey (at a very safe speed).

[Thread]
I had a look at 4 Facebook pages that opposed Wales' new 20mph limit:

- South Wales Against Blanket 20mph limits - 5.3k members

- West Wales Against Blanket 20mph limits - 4.3k

- North Wales Against Blanket 20mph limits - 2.6k

- Mid Wal Against Blanket 20mph limits - 225
The tone in Facebook groups has been particularly vitriolic at times.

However when you dig a little deeper there are reasons to suggest that the opposition has not entirely been driven by concerned members of the public.
