MJ AND HIS SCOREKEEPER 🧵

Michael Jordan won DPOY in 1988 with fishy defensive metrics at home, after a season where he was “ticked off” he didn’t get All Defense.

Did he get scorekeeper help? 🤔

If so…who WAS that guy?

And did MJ ever PAY that scorekeeper? (Hint: YES) Image
Image
Image
First, here’s the context of the 1988 season.

MJ was PISSED he didn’t get All Defensive team in 1987.

Blamed it on reputations.

Said to “check the stats” of Michael Cooper.

So MJ was:
1) PISSED
2) Focused on stats (steals, blocks)

Did he try to HELP himself in 1988? 🤔

Image
Image
Image
Here are 1988 steals and blocks at home for MJ.

The difference between his home and away stats in 88 are as much as 4 standard deviations above his OWN career averages.

He’s getting WAY more defensive stats at home vs the rest of the league.

It’s CLEARLY suspicious.
Image
Image
For those arguing he was “at his peak”…his road stats are DOWN from 87 to 88, and his road steals in 88 are his lowest from 85-90.

For those who argue players are better at home…not 2X.

Find me ANY other player who has this seasonal spike, and only at home.

Good luck. Image
So who IS the scorekeeper?

It’s Bob Rosenberg.

Bob was an employee for the Bulls for 58 years, starting with the team’s 1st year in 1966, until LAST YEAR.

He was a scorekeeper for the Bulls, White Sox, Cubs and Blackhawks.

Didn’t miss a Bulls home game for 34 years.

Image
There’s a big Chicago bias.

He grew up Chicago.

He had season tickets with the White Sox, Bears and Blackhawks.

His sporting event “bitter disappointments” are Bulls and Sox games.

He saved every program from every game.

This guy is a SUPERFAN. As a statistician in the NBA.

Image
Image
Image
Image
OK, you’ll say. It doesn’t mean stats are wrong.

Except…he was accused of counting bogus Rodman rebounds.

And he admitted helping Bulls players. When he was threatened with being reported to the league…he defended his bias WITH bias. “You never complained when you were here.”
Image
Image
Then you’ll say…nah, the league checked that stuff.

Except…in the 80’s…no.

Their “method” for checking? Comparing home and away stats.

Just like I’ve done here.

You think they’re going to challenge the meal ticket? The savior? The guy they’re TRYING to sell?

Image
Image
Image
OK, you’ll say.

Prove he had a relationship with Jordan.

Well…Rosenberg said Michael “rewarded him well” for the scrapbook he kept for MJ.

A scrapbook that—

Wait, WHAT?!?

MJ PAID his scorekeeper to keep a SCRAPBOOK? Of game articles?!?

Something MJ could get for FREE?

😳 Image
To summarize really clearly:

Jordan PAID HIS SCOREKEEPER
And paid him “well”
To maintain a scrapbook
Of free articles
After EVERY game
Per the scorekeeper’s OWN words

Who else is PAYING their scorekeeper?

For anything?

EVER? Image
STILL want to argue those 1988 stats are legit?

You got a Chicago fan, a Bulls fan, an MJ fan, who’s getting PAID by MJ to maintain a free “scrapbook,” generating stats that spike wildly ONLY at home a year after Jordan was pissed he didn’t get All Defense.

This is your GOAT?!?
So congrats to MJ for winning DPOY while paying his scorekeeper, in a league that didn’t police scorekeeping, and a league that had no desire to police the stats of its savior, Michael Jordan.

It IS sad, by the way, that Bob had to sell his 6 rings.

He did so much. Image
By the way…here are the highlights of MJ’s “10 steal game” in 1988…which shows only 6 steals.

Where are the other four?
Wasn’t the PURPOSE of the video to show 10 steals?
Why omit 40% of them?
Why wouldn’t they WANT to show 10 steals?

Does ANYONE have a possible answer?

MJ: SHOT CHARTS IN 1989 VS THE PISTONS 🧵

At age 26, Jordan gets excused for giving away a winnable series versus a hadn’t-won-anything-yet, 6+ SRS Detroit team.

In games 4-6, MJ STOPPED SHOOTING. He froze.

It’s worse than Lebron in 2011.

Look at these charts...

1/ Image
Image
Image
Game 1, a Chicago win by 6 in Detroit.

Jordan scored 32.

Except…it was on 29 shots. He was 10-29.

In the 2nd half, he made ZERO shots outside the paint. He had 2 FGs in the 4th.

Does this shot chart look like a GOAT?

He also had 4 fouls and 2 TOV in the 4th. Image
So WHY did the Bulls win?

Look at Isiah’s side of the chart. 🤢

Is this greatness? Is this impossible to beat? You know, Detroit was “unbeatable,” right?

Isiah was massively streaky. He only scored 5 in game 3 as well—the other Chicago win.

Moving on… Image

MJ IN A GAME 7: This is Your GOAT?!? 🧵

MJ lost to the Pistons in gm 7 in 1990, squandering a title.

The Pistons won the game with a spurt in the 2nd quarter, going from 25-27 to up 48-31.

Surely MJ was INCREDIBLE and the issue was everyone else, right?

Take a look. Image
First, let’s talk about the 4 points that the Bulls scored in that 8 minutes.

Surely MJ was aggressive, scoring all the points and just missing shots?

Oh wait. He scored 0 pts.

Oh, and he took only 2 shots.

Over 8 minutes.

MJ, everyone. Left it to Ed Nealy and Craig Hodges. Image
So MJ was invisible on offense in the key stretch. How about defense? The “greatest wing defender ever!”

Let’s look.

The run starts after MJ has his shot BLOCKED (can’t he separate?) and he QUITS on defense.

Where’s MJ?

Wait! There he is! Just crossing half court after a TO! Image

MJ CHOKING IN A GAME 7🧵

MJ lost game 7 to the Pistons in 1990.

His teammates get all the blame, but…MJ choked.

He had a poor 1st half against a guy with a groin pull.

And then stat padded.

Take a look. Image
Image
MJ scored 10 pts in the 1st half of game 7.

With 8 min left in the 2nd quarter, Detroit turned a deficit into a 15 pt lead at the half.

In those 8 minutes:
MJ scored NO points
He only shot the ball TWICE
Outscored by Ed Nealy and Will Perdue

Hello? MJ? Mr 34 PPG?
😳 Image
Image
MJ scored 21 in the 2nd half.

All EMPTY stats.

He didn’t start scoring until the Bulls were down 22.

He scored 9 in the 4th, but only after Detroit was up by 16 again. MJ scored nothing in an 11-0 run by Detroit at the end.

Garbage time points. Sad.

MICHAEL WILBON: WHAT HE THOUGHT OF MJ’S FINALS COMPETITION 🧵

Old heads trust @RealMikeWilbon, right?

He can’t even get through a PTI episode without mentioning MJ.

So, when he was a writer for the WA Post in the 90s, he thought MJ’s competition was GREAT, right?

Take a look. Image
Image
Image
Here Wilbon compares the 1991 Lakers to the Bulls prior to the Finals:

Cartwright > Divac
Paxson > Scott
Pippen > Worthy
Grant = Perkins
Worthy: “gimpy…doesn’t rebound”

So EVERY Bulls player was equal or better?

Isn’t that easy to beat?

Winning THIS makes you the GOAT? Image
Here are his thoughts on the 92 Blazers:

“Portland has the best athletes, but doesn’t use them in a way that would make the Blazers the best team.”

So he calls out bad coaching, and also confirms the belief expressed elsewhere that the Blazers players were “Dummies.”

So tough! Image

2011 HEAT:
BETTER WHEN LEBRON SCORED LESS 🧵

People assume Miami was best when Lebron scored the most.

That assumption isn’t true. In fact, it’s the OPPOSITE.

The 2011 Heat’s best win percentages came when:

Lebron was the #3 scorer
He took 15 shots or less

Take a look.

1/ Image
Image
The Heat were 22-2 when Lebron took 15 shots or less. A 75 win-rate equivalent. It was 30% of their games. Common.

When he had 8+ assists: 36-11
When he scored less than 18: 7-0

When Lebron deferred more, he was playing INTO the Heat’s best strategy.

Miami writers knew it. Image
Image
Let’s compare to Magic and MJ (82, 88, 89).

MJ: 5-4 with 15 shots or less
Magic: 73-27 in 82 and 88

They look NOTHING like 22-2.

Score 20 or less?
Heat: 16-4
MJ: 1-2
Magic: 60-27 in 82 and 88

Again, looks NOTHING like 16-4.

The Heat were really good with Lebron scoring less. Image

MICHAEL JORDAN: WHEN DID HE BECOME THE GOAT? 🧵

MJ fans love to say you have to win 6 titles to be the GOAT.

It’s a bad argument, for obvious reasons, and it’s NEVER been the criteria before.

What’s funny is MJ started getting referred to as the “GOAT” in…1989.

Want proof?
Image
Image
Prior to the 89 playoffs, most of the commentary on Jordan was that he may have had the best talent ever, but he wasn’t the best player yet.

Notice how, here in January, 1989, Roy Johnson actually calls out Jordan for being a bad teammate.

“Certainly not the best teammate.”
Image
Image
In the 89 playoffs, it all changed.

Bruce Jenkins, a well-known Bay Area columnist, mentioned in a June 1, 1989 article that the discussion of whether Jordan was the GOAT was happening in press rooms.

It makes sense, as there had been a flurry of articles in the prior 2 weeks. Image
