Democrats in Washington State just passed a PRIEA act which will likely result in forced outing of trans students in the state.
Initiative 2081 gathered enough signatures to go on the ballot.
Rather than fighting it at the ballot box, they decided to pass it instead.
Horrific
The bill gives parents the "right to inspect mental health records" and "mental health counseling." It would also allow parents to "opt out" of education on "topics associated with sexual activity," which will be used to bar LGBTQ+ topics in school.
Democrats are likely making the calculation that they want to fight this in courts - had they voted against it, it would go on the November ballot.
However, now it just straight up becomes law.
The state is, to my knowledge, the first blue state with a forced outing law.
Chris Rufo is cheering on the result this evening. It is a stunning betrayal of trans and LGBTQ+ residents in the state, and a complete lack of willingness to fight this out at the ballot box.
Forced outing has NOT won when Moms For Liberty has run on it.
Even if the bill would have passed at the ballot box, the strategy of fighting it in court would STILL happen.
So it's just Democrats making a political calculation to not fight at all for their LGBTQ+ residents.
Democratic Speaker Laurie Jenkins and Senator Jamie Pedersen, anticipating blowback, wrote a "why we are passing this" story where they state that they "do not believe it poses a threat to LGBTQ+ youth" but "will watch closely"
The truth is, red districts in Washington State will absolutely read the law as granting permission for forced outing.
They are being willfully obtuse and they know that it will put LGBTQ+ people at risk.
The bill was passed with haste, with little input, and now Washington State will be the first state to move from dark blue "safe" on my risk assessment map to either light blue or light red, low to medium risk for trans youth moving forward, after I have time for assessment.
The founder of Gender Justice has reported that the calc to pass the bill unanimously was based on "polling" and cost and instead plans to fight it in the court, as earlier sources indicated.
Some may question the tactic of ceding rhetorical ground.
One thing that I often see is red state legislators try to find examples of Democrats voting against trans people and then saying, "see, this isn't controversial."
I think that many may be concerned with the precedent this will set.
Organizations have released a press release:
"Initiative 2081 could have significant impacts on LGBTQ youth... Our organizations will be closely monitoring the actions of school boards"
Large number of orgs on this press release. It appears that publicly, they are acknowledging now the threat that the bill poses towards LGBTQ+ students.

1. A groundbreaking new study shows extremely low detransition or desistance rates among trans youth from 2014-2022. It uses an innovative methodology resulting in almost NO "loss to follow up."
Only 1% receiving GAC desisted or detransitioned.

2. The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, is based on 552 young patients in the GDS system in Perth, Australia. It represents the largest sample with the lowest loss to follow up rate studying retransition.
3. The Perth Gender Diversity Services Clinic was able to accomplish this due to unique circumstances. The clinic is the only one in the state of Western Australia, it took copious clinical notes, and featured extensive follow up methods.
1. On Monday, anti-trans groups released the "WPATH" files in an attempt to create a "major scandal."
I analyzed the highly editorialized document and found 216 instances of factual errors, misrepresentations, and distortions of "leaked" materials.

2. The document has 37,569 words of editorial commentary before it presents a single leak. It tries to paint a picture that is not supported by the documents "leaked," that you would not read if presented with them first.
3. The files were first shared by right-wing activist, Michael Shellenberger, then nearly every anti-trans org... Genspect, the ADF, and FAIR in medicine.
FIM even added a fake red bar "fact checked: true," I assume an homage to my anticipated article.
1. In recent years, JK Rowling's defenders have argued she has "never said anything transphobic."
Today, she called transgender journalist India Willoughby "a man," and said that she was "cosplaying a male fantasy."
Lets dive into what happened.

2. After comparing transgender women using restrooms to allowing pedophile teachers, one person replied with a video of WIlloughby and asked if Rowling would force her into a male restroom.
3. Rowling stated that Willoughby is "a man reveling in his misogynistic performance of what he thinks a 'woman means" and then added that India is "cosplaying a misogynistic male fantasy," a claim that stems from the notion that transgender people are "fetishists."
Now, let's say you are a researcher opposed to trans care and you want to find something that erases that.
You find a variable... "Psych specialist visits"!
Turns out, suicidal people often have contact with the psych system...
You can erase the direct connection now!
Except...
Not getting gender affirming care might lead to more psychiatric issues, which then lead to suicide. It is erroneous to claim that gender affirming care "doesn't save lives."
Yet that is what some reporting on a recent Finnish study did!
1. The Department of Education Office For Civil Rights has declared a formal investigation into Owasso Public Schools over transgender teen of Choctaw heritage Nex Benedict.
This comes after a complaint submitted by the Human Rights Campaign.
More complaints are pending.
2. The complaint alleges a pattern of widespread harassment and abuse of LGBTQ+ people, including Nex Benedict, in Oklahoma and in Owasso Public Schools. It calls for a title IX investigation, which appears to have commenced.
3. The letter from the Office For Civil Rights states that it will be investigating alleged Title IX violations as well as Sec 504 and Title II violations over the failure to respond to harassment in the school.
1. In a just released legal filing, Attorney General Ken Paxton of Texas is demanding full names, addresses of trans members in Texas from PFLAG national, as well as "contingency plans" around new anti-trans laws.
The org alleges retalliation.

2. The civil investigative demand, issued Feb 5th, calls for extensive identifying information and records.
PFLAG states that it is retaliation, and that it violates free speech, association, unreasonable search and seizure.
3. The demands include:
- Complete names
- Social Security Numbers
- Dates of Birth
- Street and mailing addresses
- Home, cell, and business phone numbers
- Email addresses
that center on a statement from CEO Brian Bond, which includes that PFLAG has "1,500 Texas members"
