1. A groundbreaking new study shows extremely low detransition or desistance rates among trans youth from 2014-2022. It uses an innovative methodology resulting in almost NO "loss to follow up."

2. The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, is based on 552 young patients in the GDS system in Perth, Australia. It represents the largest sample with the lowest loss to follow up rate studying retransition.

3. The Perth Gender Diversity Services Clinic was able to accomplish this due to unique circumstances. The clinic is the only one in the state of Western Australia, it took copious clinical notes, and featured extensive follow up methods.

4. Using patient databases and clinical notes, they determined of 552 case closures, the vast majority proceeded on to adult care. 5% reidentified as their birth sex, but only 1% did so after the mental health assessment determined they were ready for gender affirming care.

5. The report paints a picture of a very engaged care team, non-judgmental psychological support, and caring professionals who accurately provide mental health assessments and help youth in their gender journeys.

6. For those who later reidentify as their assigned sex at birth, only 2 did so during medical care, with 1 doing so after puberty blockers and 1 doing so after hormones out of 552 patients.

7. This comports with other studies showing low desistance, detransition, or reidentification rates. A United States study of 317 youth, showing that only 2.5% reidentified 5 years later, for example.

9. This study is unique, however, in that it has a larger sample size, the lowest "loss to follow up," and used extensive clinical notes to make determinations in a way other studies could not. It will be cited as one of the strongest desistance/detrans studies moving forward.
