BREAKING: looks like Democrat Hakeem Jeffries could become Speaker of U.S House in July, and move to pass bill disqualifying Trump from Becoming President

The Supreme Court's ruling keeping Trump on ballot determined that only Congress can enforce language in the 14th Amendment barring anyone who "engaged in insurrection" from holding federal office.

"Responsibility for enforcing Section 3 against federal officeholders and candidates rests with Congress and not the States," the court's majority opinion states. (Congress took up the question of Trump and insurrection when the House impeached him for alleged incitement in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, though Senate Republicans acquitted him and he maintained he was innocent.)

Democrats in congress are planning to Ban Trump from becoming President.

A leading House Democrat is preparing legislation in response to the Supreme Court's ruling that Colorado could not disqualify former President Trump from its state ballot.

Rep. Jamie Raskin said he is working with moderate Republicans to pass the bill.

Raskin, a former member of the Jan. 6 select committee, said he is already crafting the bill, telling Axios, "I'm working on it — today."

Dems Just got a Big Gift from the GOP.

On Tuesday, Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) stunned his colleagues by announcing he will leave Congress on March 22.

While Buck said in November he was retiring from the lower chamber, he gave no indication his departure would be so imminent.

The lawmaker said he does not want to “lie on behalf” of former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Buck’s retirement shrinks the GOP’s majority in the House from six to five, 218-213.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., will still have two votes to spare before needing Democrats to govern.

But illnesses and other unexpected absences could make his already difficult job even more challenging.

Speaking to reporters shortly after the news broke, Johnson suggested he did not get a heads-up from Buck.

“I was surprised by Ken’s announcement. I’m looking forward to talking with him about that,” the speaker said.

Under House rules, the winning speaker candidate must attain a majority among all representatives. Assuming full attendance, the majority threshold is 218 in the 433-member House (Republicans have a 218-to-213 seat majority.

However, the majority line is determined by the votes cast “for a person by name,” so if a member were to vote “present,” that would lower the majority threshold.

If Five Gop members resign, that would lower the majority threshold to 213.

As a result, Democrat Hakeem Jeffries can become speaker of the GOP House.
