Talking about the feminization of Cassie and why many Cassie fans really dislike it, a thread 🧵

I was inspired to finish this thread by oomf (@y2kmarcus_) and by a post I made yesterday, where a lot of people, and one of the biggest WW accounts (@THEMYSCIRALORE , also oomf😭) seemed to disagree.
Cassie Sandsmark was created as a tomboy Wonder Girl, a stark contrast to Donna troy who is very feminine. This was a central part of her character, and she was one of the only masc female characters in DC at the time (mid 90s)

In fact, her literal creator basically summed up everything I’m gonna say in this thread when asked about it. I feel like that should at least mean something. Image
There’s obviously nothing wrong with being feminine, but Cassie wasn’t. She expressed herself through her clothing, which just so happened to be nerdy and masculine. This was very different from (ALMOST) all female characters at the time.

Even when Cassie was wearing long hair to look more like Donna, she still had her own style, she was still masc and had her own style!!

in YJ98, they made her original outfit slightly more feminine by giving her a tight shirt & and different body type. This is probably just because they gave her a male love interest, although they still tried to keep masc, with short hair under the wig & a “tomboy” personality.

Then the 2000s came, and it seemed like every single comic book girl over the age of 13 had to be in tight clothes so we can see every curve they have. This happened to Cassie, although it wasn’t that extreme besides the covers (read alt text for explanation)
The outfit they gave cassie on the cover of Devastation Returns. She’s very thin and is wearing skinny jeans, her hair is longer (or just not tied up lol), her leather jacket is gone and you can see her nipples through her shirt.
Cassie in the actual book. Her body type is drastically different, more so like a 14 year old girl (which she is). Shes wearing baggy jeans with a big belt, she has a jacket over her crop top. The Wonder girl symbol also takes up the entire crop top instead of just being over her breasts. Her hair is just above shoulder length and it’s tied up into pigtails and much curlier than the cover.
but then, in 2003, a second fem cassie hit the towers. Cassie didn’t even look like herself anymore, more like an oversexualized blonde version of Donna Tory with a hint of Cassie (the hint being the chestplate & the fact that she’s wearing jeans). Mind you, she was 15/16🫠

N52, I hate you more than anything. You ruined my half of favourite characters, and erased the other half.

Cassie’s new outfit was literally just Donna Troy but pink and with weird gloves. Still a minor btw!! Not only as a tomboy Cassie truther, but as a DD girly this hurts!!

Then, we got… This. I don’t even know what to say tbh, it’s like DC was screaming,
“WE DON’T CARE HOW BAD IT LOOKS, JUST MAKE HER GIRLY!!!”

In 2024 the world still hasn’t healed, in fact, it’s maybe gotten worse? No more sexualizing Cassie, on to making her dress like a 7 year old girl who just went on a shopping spree at Claires WHILE ALSO having a half-assed, out of character reasoning for not being masc anymore.

I do understand the appeal of some fem Cassie designs, although I just can’t bring myself to actually LIKE them. She’s not supposed to be super fashionable, she’s supposed to be nerdy I know some argue that she “grows out of it” but there’s multiple reasons I don’t like that…

…The biggest being most of the designs, she still is a teenager. Let her be a nerdy teenager, she doesn’t have to look 25 at 16. I don’t have a problem with fem comic girls, but Cassie shouldn’t be one of them.

She’s SUPPOSED to be different. It’s just boring and sad to me that every female character seemingly has to fall into this mold of “not too tomboy” once they’re deemed too old for it, or some (usually male) artist wants to give them big boobies and a latex supersuit.

Do I think older/adult Cassie needs to wear jorts and a t-shirt? NO! but what I do think is that her “growing out” of being tomboy is stupid. There are plenty of girls who stay masc for their whole life, and Cassie SHOULD be one of them.
