Let's say I want to go to the Lake District, and say I will go to Penrith. The best train prices I can find for a month from now are £95.50 return.
Now I am doing this based on per person costs but if we look at AirBnBs for two people, there is this lovely apartment for two people in Penrith for a total of £333 for the weekend, which is £166.50 per person. So far we are up to £262.
Taking into account food, nights out, travel, attractions etc across four days you could easily spend over £150 which puts you into a £400+ hole on your British holiday. Let's look at going abroad!!
Let's go to Rome!
First up are flights - £57 return sorted.
Here is a lovely private apartment in Rome for £76 a night, £226 for the whole weekend.
That's £283 for a weekend a way in May, let's say we spend the same amount (even though the general cost of living and going out is cheaper in Rome than in Carlisle - the nearest UK city on this cost of living database) it's coming out at £433+ for a weekend in Rome.
Now £17 might not be the thing that is putting people off staying in the UK but let's be real, as beautiful as the Lake District is, as the UK is, if you can go to Europe for the same if not less money - you're going to.
Obviously, for this I just used 10 minutes on Skyscanner and Airbnb and any experienced traveller knows there are much cheaper websites to use but my point stands.
Also worth pointing out that it's 4 and a half hours to get to Penrith from London but 2 and a half hours to Rome...
