Would be nice if “believe victims” can also be “give victims work the right way”. Lots of these involve DM grooming with people hoping that by playing along they will get work. Lots of outraged people could ACTUALLY give work the proper way. They DON’T. /1
Dozens of people came out against Warren Ellis. A notable thing missing from that process is that there didn’t seem to be anyone offering to give them work (even small work), and multiple people were in the position to do so. Editors, people who work for news sites, etc. /2
Wouldn’t a logical outcome of exposing the bad behavior be highlighting the right way to do things? It frustrates me that victims seem to be used for a mob… but not for actual work. Which is what got people into this situation in the first place… looking for work. /3
Some will distort this message into saying the perpetrators shouldn’t be held responsible for bad actions. That’s not true; I’m saying something else. Helping people goes beyond using their name and story to go after someone else. If you can provide help, help. /4
I’m pretty bitter about comics right now. It appears more and more like we have elected to prioritize online drama over comics in all fronts. Internet clout is more sought after than comic work. The last two weeks have been an absolute shitshow of fighting and destruction. /5
If even a fraction of the energy would divert to making comics, building team, and helping people through work… the situation would get healthier. But facing facts, I just don’t think that’s what people want right now. The product is social clout and outrage. Not comics. /6
But this is just me. Like I said, I’m bitter right now. Which means it’s time to bow out for a bit. My best to those pushing to build. It’s never wrong to build.
Build strong. /end
