Ugadi - Kannada New Year Day
First of all, It's Ugadi and not Yugadi (Forcibly Sanskirtized)
Celebration of Ugadi is an agrarian centric traditions
Most Ugadi worships, ceremonies conducted and rituals practiced are around agrarian communities and preparations for new crop cycles and many Ugadi related terms have their origins in Kannada.
Ugadi predates advent of Aryan's & Vikrama/Salivahana Eras.
Many Indian new years are based on farming and harvesting cycles. The staple corps, harvesting seasons vary across India, hence there are multiple new years in India.
VikramAditya & ShaliVahana's started their era by their names replacing the existing eras to mark their victory. They did not start any new harvest seasons or monsoon cycles.
The Chalukya king VikramAditya VI to marks beginning of his era had also started his calendar as 'Chalukya Vikrama Kala', based on same earlier existing seasons and cycles (ಸೂಳು - SooLu).
Origin of Ugadi
Fall of Ugadi is at the end of previous crop cycle and beginning of the new crop cycle. The preparation for new crops starts with Ugadi before the monsoon rains set in.
As per M. NanjundaSwami IPS, Ugadi comes from two words Ugu + Adi.
Ugu/ಉಗು (Old Kannada) = Fresh waters collected from farm lands/waterbodies (Lakes, Wells, Ponds, Canals, etc.)
So Ugu also means Hosa Neera (New/Fresh Waters).
Adi = Sun/Beginning of new light (Hosa BeLaku).
As per ancient practices, pots of waters were worshipped and offered to Crop Gods, Rain Gods, Sun God. Then the blessed water would be used for daily needs at home/fields. In course of time this practice got restricted to worship water pots at home and use them for daily needs.
Where all is Ugadi Celebrated?
Ugadi is celebrated mostly across all the provinces that were part of KarNata territories or were under the rule of Kannada dynasties for prolonged period, i.e Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Telangana State, Andhra Pradesh.
It's note worthy that the Cholas & Pandyas had their separate Tamil new year.
Though under the influence of KarNata Samrajya and earlier Kannada ruled dynasties like Gangas & HoyssaLas, some communities in TN do celebrates Ugadi.
Main Ugadi items used and their purpose
- Bevu (Neem) is perennial medicinal plant useful to treat many summer discomforts.
- Neem also works as a cooling agent, helps to alleviate summer heat.
- Neem is also a blood purifier when taken in controlled quantities.
- Fresh neem leaves are antibacterial and insect repellant and are tied near Tora Bagila (Main doors),
- Neem leaves are also dipped in bathing waters.
Ugadi falls during Mango season, both Mango Leaves and Mango hold special importance in Ugadi.
- Mango Contains immune-boosting nutrients, good for eyes and heart.
- Being rich in antioxidants & Vitamin-C, it may also helps to fight against common cold & cough.
- Mango Leave are supposed to have Etheric Gold which purifies ones Aura/Chakras (Subtle bodies).
