My mother had asthma since childhood. She was prescribed a steroid to be taken once a day. I was born when she was 30..till I turned 30 I didn't know my mother had asthma..thanks to the medicine she took. Not even a rare wheezing episode.
Nearing her retirement, my mother met an ayurvedic doc. He convinced my mother to stop the steroid and switch over to the pudis and portions he will give. She spent anything between 7 to 8k for these medicines per month.
She was totally blinded by him. A double graduate, principal of a govt aided school, was now entrapped. Goes without saying, stopping the steroid had major repercussions on her health
Everyday wheezing episodes for hours..sometimes lasting upto 48 hours. She became very weak. Lost appetite. We tried our best to convince her to stop this foolishness and take her steroid, which had helped for years. She remained adamant.
She reached a point where she even stopped taking antibiotics if she had fever or cold. She was convinced that those yucky looking liquids and powders would cure her of all ailments..but it will take time
In Jan 2017, her left leg got swollen and turned red. It was my husband's bday and we went over to take my parents' blessings and also say goodbye as my parents tickets were booked for the next day to my sister's place.
Appa opened the door and said Amma has been lying on the bed extremely sick since mrg and she is not responding. We immediately took her to my family doc who advised immediate hospitalisation.
Amma was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and what followed was months of traumatic experiences in and out of hospitals.
On her second round of hospitalisation, Amma suffered from extreme wheezing. No amount of pumps or other medicines were helping her. The wheezing finally settled after about 48 hours. She got discharged two days later
Followed by complete loss of appetite, weakening of body, depression, continuous wheezing and drowsiness. Her body was shutting down.
We decided to shift to a bigger house and move in my parents as by now she needed complete care. We shifted in May 2017. The situation did not improve much.
In Sept 2017, Amma started acting weird. She was disoriented and we had to rush her to hospital again. This time the diagnosis was pulmonary embolism. She had pneumonia and was to be in the ICU.
Her organs started failing one by one..my sis and bil flew down as we knew it was time. The ICU doctor called us and asked if we wanted her put on a ventilator. We had already decided against it. It was time to let her go..end her suffering.
We gave our consent for de escalation of treatment..we were allowed to see her and say our good byes. It was only a matter of time now...doc said it may take one or two days..she was gone in 20 mins
At the age of 64. Why am i sharing this deeply personal account...coz I am personally scared for life coz of ayurveda. I still believe my mother would have survived/led a comparatively healthy life..if she had not stopped allopathic medicines.
One may agree or not...some health conditions cannot be cured or treated with alternative medicines. If one is used to one form of medicine or treatment all their life..its dangerous for them to switch or experiment!
The so called alternative and natural way of treatment is not cheap. The price we pay is too dear!
