I deeply respect @jwhitepubradio and @toddzwillich as journalists—which makes @1a's LIVE broadcast platforming uncessary self-managed abortion fearmongering by @CAKitchener and anti-abortion LIES from Arizona state rep Matt Gress all the more disturbing.

.@CAKitchener repeats this story ON AIR. Yet, as I've reported, mifepristone "may be an effective and safe option for abortion beyond the first trimester—particularly in legally restrictive settings," according to the peer-reviewed journal Contraception.

@CAKitchener This fact isn't to detract from Briana's experience, which WAS scary. For HER. And that fear during her self-managed abortion shouldn't have been compounded by the fear of criminalization at the emergency room.

@CAKitchener Pregnant people CAN and WILL self-manage later into their pregnancies in legally restrictive settings, which researchers, journalists, etc. used to call other countries in a real nod to American exceptionalism. We need to prepare people for what to expect during a later SMA...

I sound angry, but I'm sad. I'm near tears at the casual callousness.

In the United States, state abortion bans, Medicaid's abortion coverage ban (via the Hyde Amendment), clinic closures, etc. make even the earliest abortions difficult to access.
