This is Bowen Turner of Orangeburg, South Carolina. Remember his face. He was accused of raping 3 different girls between 2018-2019.

Recently, he crashed his truck while intoxicated and verbally assaulted the officer who arrested him.

🧵Let's talk about the number of times the system has let this man get away.Image
Image
First, let’s talk about the victims (that we know of).
Chloe Bess and Dallas Stoller both told a similar story of being violently raped in the woods while they were at a party.
They were both bullied horrifically in Orangeburg after they reported Bowen.
Sadly, Dallas took her own life in 2021.
Chloe moved out of the state.
The third victim remains anonymous.Image
Image
Charges were filed in Dallas and Chloe’s cases. Bowen got out on house arrest.

Years passed and Bowen was caught violating the terms of his bond conditions 60+ times.

Most people would've been thrown in jail.

But not Bowen.

Bowen’s family paid for a defense attorney who happens to be a state senator named @BradHutto (who is up for re-election this year!)Image
Senator Hutto managed to turn the hearing for the Turner's bond violations into a PLEA DEAL HEARING for the rape cases.

He got judge Markley Dennis and prosecutor David Miller to agree to a sweetheart deal for Bowen where he was able to plea down to JUST ONE COUNT of assault and HE WAS GIVEN PROBATION under the Youthful Offenders Act.Image
Image
How did Hutto do that?

Well, in SC defense attorneys can also be state lawmakers.

And that's a big problem because lawmakers decide who gets to become judges.

Unfair right?

The Bowen Turner case is a perfect example of this.

The prosecutor in Turner’s case is currently trying to become a judge and he needs Hutto’s voting power behind him.Image
In a surprise to literally no one, it didn’t take long after Bowen screwed up the sweetheart deal he was given.

He violated his parole in less than a month and was back in jail for public disorderly conduct and he reportedly threatened to bite a deputy during his arrest.

He was sentenced to 1 + year in prison for violating the youthful offenders act (YOA) and released in November 2023 — on the anniversary of Dallas Stoller's death.Image
Meanwhile, prosecutor Bill Weeks’ office STILL had not prosecuted Dallas’ rape case. They claimed to her family they couldn’t win because the victim was dead and refused to try no matter how many people begged them.
Weeks could have tried Dallas’ case without her. Instead he blamed her death for his miscarriage of justice in this case.
He is running for solicitor again this year, btw.

In March 2024, Bowen Turner was in a single DUI crash. He verbally abused the female officer who arrested him for DUI, calling her a bitch and other words in between temper tantrums about how he’s a “white boy” so he shouldn’t go to jail.

It was truly chilling to see this man WHO SO MANY PEOPLE DEFENDED behave like HE HAD LEARNED NOTHING ALL THIS TIME.

Now, 3 weeks after that incident something really weird happened. Bowen was able to plead guilty to his DUI.... which.... I have never seen a DUI get resolved that quickly.

Magistrate Judge Adonikam J. Hudson gave Turner credit for 17 days time served....and that was it for his sentence, according to court docs.

Odd, right?!Image
Image
No. This is a pattern we see over and over and over again, especially in SC but I'm sure its everywhere.

People who happen to men who happen to be privileged who happen to have connections to money and power get PASS over PASS.

And the system ENCOURAGES them to keep pushing the line and MORE INNOCENT PEOPLE GET HURT.

We have 140+ episodes of cases where this happens on over and over again.

Bowen Turner is in prison for now on his YOA offense. He still faces charges for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

We are trying to figure out how much time he could possibly get — and more importantly WHO is still trying to protect him.

Stay tuned to this week’s True Sunlight podcast and check out this week’s @cupofjustice

Also thank god for queen @sarahafordesq fighting for the victims in this case.

“With Netflix, we get [access] to 200+ million people and 70+ different languages. We’re hoping that that creates a tidal wave to unlock the rest of the story. And we’re sitting on the rest of the story,"

This is SO MESSED UP. I am SO SO GLAD I had nothing to do with this doc 1/
IF YOU HAVE UNCOVERED OTHER CRIMES YOU SHOULD TELL THE WORLD ABOUT THEM.
EXPOSE THEM.
TELL THE POLICE.
MAKE NOISE.
DONT HOLD OUT UNTIL YOU CAN MAKE A DEAL OFF OF IT!
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?!?!!
I could go on and on about how horrifying these filmakers were. How they treated me like garbage. How they treated Sandy Smith.
How just the sight of the doc makes my stomach hurt.
But this tells you EVERYTHING you should know about them.
My god

🧵 Before we fully unpack the defense's latest motions on the Murdaugh Murders Podcast tomorrow, I want to talk about Dick and Jim's credibility.
As a journalist whose goal is to report the truth, the first thing I do when I get new info is weigh the credibility of the source..
For starters, let’s go back to September 9 Jim Griffin told the press that “is accepting fully responsibility for his conduct” and “intends to pay back the money he stole.”
...
counton2.com/the-murdaugh-i…
Also last year, Dick and Jim claimed that Alex was poor and at one time described him as “impecunious.”

Oh, and that all of that money — $10 million — went to his opioid addiction, he said.

I didn’t say the motion was full of dirty tricks.
I’m saying that filing a motion on the event of Thanksgiving — knowing the state can’t respond for an entire news cycle — and then clarifying what they meant in a footnote later is an example of the dirty tricks they pull.
It is dirty to intentionally mislead people.
It’s dirty to make file a motion making it look like they’re providing 80 pages of evidence when really it’s mostly either evidence that looks better for them or evidence that the public doesn’t understand.
Overall, and we will explain this further on the podcast tomorrow — We can’t say for certain if these claims are completely BS or not because so much information is missing.
What we can say is it contains partial information from a source that has been unreliable since day one

Russell Laffitte Trial 📝 Day 7 Part 2: We are back from lunch. Russell is still on direct with his attorney Matt Austin....
Right now, Austin is basically asking Russell to explain his way out of all of the emails, checks, etc. etc. in these cases where he was conservator. and asking him if he "intended" to steal from Alex's clients.
"I should have cut a money order on the Hannah Plyler conservatorship, I just didn't feel like it...."
"To make it clean I should have done it like that."

OK here we go Russell Laffitte Trial Day 124123 (or it feels like it) 📝: Back in the media room. From my understanding, the defense gained a little traction with the witness this morning who testified about conservatorships.
They have one more witness to go...
DAMN. Judge Gergel seems pissed at the evidence the defense is trying to enter.
He just said something like: You can't commit a crime and then give the money back and then everything is OK. That's not how this works.
HERE WE GO. RUSSELL LAFFITTE IS TAKING THE STAND.
