So, I have a personal story I want to share. One I've been reflecting on a lot in recent days because of certain narratives.

In the 1970s, my Conservative parents joined a Christian group that was co-opting Judaism. They were Messianic Jews, or Jews for Jesus. 🧵/1

To be clear, all denominations of Judaism, as well as national Jewish organizations, reject Messianic Judaism as a form of Judaism.

But, it was how I was raised. Stupid me, until I was in my early 20s, I really believed I was Jewish. 🤦🏻‍♀️ /2

After my parents were divorced, my mom married an *actual* Jewish man whose family came to New York from Romania in the early days of the Holocaust.

Growing up, we celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas, plus my birthday is in December, so I thought this was great. /3
