How Bayern Munich Bypassed Arsenal’s Press

[THREAD] Image
Bayern Munich kept progressing through the left-side vs Arsenal – the wide triangle consisting of Mazraoui, Musiala, and Guerreiro created problems. Image
Arsenal wanted to trap Bayern with their hybrid press but they could still find their free man with Neuer’s help.

In the pressing structure, Saka was often between the LCB and LB – White only pushed high (to the LB) depending on Saka’s positioning.

Bayern took advantage of Arsenal's switch.

- White pressed Mazraoui
- Jorginho backed up his press by marking Guerreiro

This left Musiala 🆓 and could combine quickly with Mazraoui.

(Saliba could be worried about Kane 1v1 Gabriel).

Jamal Musiala was especially very hard to close down – Jorginho marked him tightly but he still could get away from him and allow Bayern to progress.

In this example, Arsenal were already marking Bayern's left-side but they still could progress by winning the 50/50 duels.

Musiala vs Jorginho was one of the key duels last night and Bayern took advantage of that.

Tuchel definitely wanted Musiala to be ‘free’ as much as possible.

The left side often interchanges positions for the access to open up.

Musiala can also do it against Declan Rice in tight spaces.

What a player.

Thierry Henry on Jamal Musiala.

“Give it to Musiala, he will bail you out”

From the previous examples, we can see how calm is Mazraoui under pressure.

In the only goal of the match, Mazraoui was able to win the duel vs Saka and bypass Arsenal’s counter-press.

This led to a transitional situation where then Bayern succeeded in hurting Arsenal.

Luis Enrique’s PSG vs Inter

“Champions of Europe”

thread🔻 Image
From the start, Luis Enrique’s PSG apply intense pressure as a unit against Inter’s build-up.

Dembele initially takes on the hybrid role to particularly focus on the GK + CBs. However, they then shift into more of a man-oriented pressing. Image

Wingers push higher to press the WCB.

This triggers a chain reaction for the 2nd and 3rd line of the defence (ex: Hakimi/Neves pressing Dimarco). Image

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal vs Manchester United

“The Corner Kings”

thread🔻 Image
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal continued their winning run by beating Manchester United 2-0 at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners struggled to create chances from open play against Amorim’s 5-2-3 defensive shape, but their set-pieces can threaten every team in the world. Image
Despite Gabriel Magalhães' absence, Arsenal could score two goals from corner-kicks. Timber and Saliba stepped up and helped decide the game last night.

Because of that, we will focus on analyzing Arsenal’s corner-kick attempts against Manchester United. Image

Tactical Focus: Francesco Farioli’s Ajax Build-Up vs PSV

thread🔻 Image
Francesco Farioli’s Ajax utilize the 4-3-3 shape in the build-up against Peter Bosz’s PSV.

They look to bait the press and attack the space/gaps to progress. Image
In this shape, there are a lot of runs/movements from the 8/CMs — which benefits the FBs and wingers to receive support for the combinations.

Tactical Focus: Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth High Press vs Man City

thread🔻 Image
Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth is one of the most intense teams in the Premier League — they like to high press and disrupt the opponent’s attempt to build up from the back.

Against Man City’s 4-3-3, they look to find answers despite struggling in early minutes. Image
Bournemouth starts by minimizing the access to Man City’s CBs and midfield three which leaves more space for Walker & Gvardiol in the wide areas.

However, Ederson's presence causes The Cherries another problem as he can attract Evanilson and create more space for Akanji. Image

Arne Slot’s Liverpool vs Manchester United

“Winning His 1st PL Battle Against ten Hag”

thread🔻 Image
Arne Slot has continued with the same players since the 2nd half-game against Ipswich — he seems to have found his preferrable line-up from the current Liverpool squad. Image
Liverpool starts with their usual shape against Man United, who tries to minimize central access with their narrow 4-2-4/4-4-2 shape.

Szoboszlai looks to drop and drift wide to the LHS where he can receive the ball, and then interchange with Diaz.

Thiago Motta’s Juventus Build-up vs Como

thread🔻 Image
Motta’s Juventus build-up with a 4-2 to 3-2-2-3/3-2-5 against Como.

He doesn’t invert the CBs — instead, he tasked Cambiaso to move inside where he can form the double pivot or occupy the inside channel depending on Locatelli’s positioning.

(@Effmatch)

The 4-2 shape can also helped by the presence of the GK (Di Gregorio) which allows Locatelli to advance in the deep phase.

Up-back-through combinations.
