How Bayern Munich Bypassed Arsenal’s Press

[THREAD] Image
Bayern Munich kept progressing through the left-side vs Arsenal – the wide triangle consisting of Mazraoui, Musiala, and Guerreiro created problems. Image
Arsenal wanted to trap Bayern with their hybrid press but they could still find their free man with Neuer’s help.

In the pressing structure, Saka was often between the LCB and LB – White only pushed high (to the LB) depending on Saka’s positioning.

Bayern took advantage of Arsenal's switch.

- White pressed Mazraoui
- Jorginho backed up his press by marking Guerreiro

This left Musiala 🆓 and could combine quickly with Mazraoui.

(Saliba could be worried about Kane 1v1 Gabriel).

Jamal Musiala was especially very hard to close down – Jorginho marked him tightly but he still could get away from him and allow Bayern to progress.

In this example, Arsenal were already marking Bayern's left-side but they still could progress by winning the 50/50 duels.

Musiala vs Jorginho was one of the key duels last night and Bayern took advantage of that.

Tuchel definitely wanted Musiala to be ‘free’ as much as possible.

The left side often interchanges positions for the access to open up.

Musiala can also do it against Declan Rice in tight spaces.

What a player.

“Give it to Musiala, he will bail you out”

From the previous examples, we can see how calm is Mazraoui under pressure.

In the only goal of the match, Mazraoui was able to win the duel vs Saka and bypass Arsenal’s counter-press.

This led to a transitional situation where then Bayern succeeded in hurting Arsenal.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid vs Inter

“How Atletico Gave Inter Their 1st Loss In 2024”

[THREAD] Image
Atletico looked to defend more in their 5-4-1 mid-block but they were also ready to high press since Inter often tried to bait them. Image
Atletico’s press was usually with man-to-man, this forced Inter to play more direct — resulting in duels/turnovers.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal vs FC Porto

“We Always Play”

[THREAD] Image
In the 1st leg, Arsenal played with Rice as the DM/6 — supported by White/Odegaard to form a double pivot.

Sérgio Conceição tasked Pepê in particular to jump when the ball was directed to the DM/6 (Rice).

his was part of the process before Galeno’s goal — with Pepê jumping up to Jorginho (DM/6) and blocking the access.

Liverpool vs Man City

“How Both Teams Exploited The Space Between The Lines”

[THREAD] Image
Similar to the 1st game at Etihad Stadium, Man City looked to exploit the space between the lines in Liverpool’s 4-1-4-1 shape.

Jorginho & Havertz, The Key vs FC Porto?

[THREAD] Image
In the first leg, Arsenal struggled to find the breakthrough against Porto where they recorded 0 shots on target.

This was how Porto defended against them — minimizing the space for players who operate between the lines but leaving big space behind. Image
They tried to attack the space on the left side (Martinelli), but the execution was often unsuccessful and this messed up their attacking momentum.

(They could do this again).

Player Focus: João Neves vs Rangers

[THREAD] Image
Initially, Joao Neves played as the double pivot with Florentino Luis.

But he was operating deeper to dictate the build-up. Image
From the double pivot, Joao Neves could drop to the CCB/LCB — stretching the backline and utilizing his playmaking from deep.

(11/13 long balls completed)

Kai Havertz & Jorginho Combo vs Sheffield United

[THREAD] Image
Havertz often offers the run in-behind to attack the space — this allows players like Jorginho to have a constant/reliable target to progress the ball (especially with the ball over the top).

In the match against Sheffield United alone, there were 4 examples I used with one of them resulting in the goal.Image
