a short thread on minouche shafik and white supremacy on campus...
shafik was the director at lse when i did my masters and peter cvjetanovic, the poster boy for the 'unite the right' charlottesville white supremacist and anti-semitic rally was also doing his masters there
we wrote a petition to have him expelled from lse but we were told by lse leadership that they couldn't do that - bc 'free speech' but also bc they can't and don't do a background check on political views of applicants
full statement: thetab.com/uk/london/2018…
we also held a demo outside of the directorate's office () and confronted shafik at an event on campus () - she gave us the same spiel basically but also added: political screening of students was both “impossible and illegal”.thebeaverlse.co.uk/anti-racism-pr… thebeaverlse.co.uk/students-grill…
this was about an avowed white supremacist who was filmed and photographed chanting 'jews will not replace us' at a university in the US
he was allowed to continue his education and graduated in 2019
meanwhile at columbia shafik is calling the nypd on pro-palestine student protestors, kicking them out of their accommodation, suspending them, expelling them!
for cop shafik, an anti-semitic white supremacist student involved in a deadly rally has more of a right to education than students assembling on campus to demand an end to genocide and divestment from israeli occupation which has murdered thousands

Had a conversation yesterday with my younger brother which low key blew my mind.
I was telling about how I was anxious about the future and planning work two years in advance was scary. He said he could relate because he's in a 3 year apprenticeship.
I said that was different bc with academia/studies, it's structured so you don't have to think about next steps: they're planned for you. I never worried about the future when I was studying bc it was very clear to me at the time: Bachelors degree, then Masters, then work or PhD
But now that I'm working and there's no clear path about what the future will hold, none of the systematic and hierarchical progression of academia (plus a pandemic lol), thinking about the future makes me panic! There's no next higher level course to study for.

Most ppl know of the poem, "The White Man's Burden," the ultimate anthem for colonialism. But not everyone realises it was written by Kipling, author of the Jungle Book. And even fewer ppl know it was specifically written as an appeal to the US to colonise the Philippines
When you google the "White Man's Burden," typically this Pears soap ad comes up. The message cleanliness = a gift of civilisation = whiteness. Pears did a bunch of ads on this premise. But the White Man on this ad isn't some rando, it's Admiral Dewey! The man who captured Manila
Dewey sunk the Spanish float during the Spanish-American War and maintained control over Manila harbour after Pres McKinley declared American authority over the PH in the name of "Benevolent Assimilation" on Dec 21, 1898.
