Where was Sanjay during the war?

Sanjay is an important character of Mahabharata who is most famous for narrating the events of the great war to the blind king. He is the primary narrator of all the chapters of Kurukshetra war.

According to popular belief Sanjay was sitting in front of Dhritarashtra during the entire duration of the war narrating him the live telecast of the events as they happened using the divine vision granted to him by Ved Vyasa.

What does the book say? Let's examine.Image
This is what Vyasdev's boon to Sanjay was. Notice the last verse in the attached screenshot. It effectively says that Sanjay would survive the war and would be protected from any harm.

Now if Sanjay was supposed to spend his entire time sitting inside Hastinapur castle, this last verse does not make any sense.Image
This is how Sanjay's narration of the war begins. Even the chapter name here mentions Sanjay returning from the battlefield after Bhishma's death. It is clear from the following that Dhritarashtra was hearing about the events of the war after the fact not a live telecast.
It is also clear that Sanjay was present in the battlefield and not in Hastinapur during the war.Image
Here in the beginning of Drona Parva it says without any ambiguity about Sanjay returning to Hastinapur from Kurukshetra war camp. Image
This is the beginning of Karna Parva which even mentions the medium of transport used by Sanjay to travel between Kurukshetra and Hastinapur - he rode during the night using horses as swift as wind. Image
Here in the beginning of Shalya Parva, Duryodhana was already dead when Sanjay entered Hastinapur. Image
Now this portion here in Shalya Parva mentions without any doubt, what was Sanjay up to during his presence in the battlefield - he was fighting in the war.

The first screenshot here mentions about him fighting alongside Kripacharya fighting against Dhrishtadyumna.

Second screenshot talks about him getting captured by Satyaki while running away from Dhrishtadyumna.Image
Image
Now this part here takes you back to the part of Vyasa's boon in the beginning where he promised about Sanjay surviving the war.

When Satyaki was about to kill Sanjay on Dhrishtadyumna's instructions, Vyasdev appeared in the battlefield and protected Sanjay.

Sanjay even had an emotion encounter with Duryodhana after this incident.Image
Now there is an interesting anecdote. Check out the number of Shlokas in Bhishma, Drona, Karna and Shalya Parva of Mahabharata.
Bhishma Parva ~ close to 6000
Drona Parva ~ close to 9000
Karna Parva ~ close to 5000
Shalya Parva ~ close to 3200

2 days of Karna are described in around the same number of verses as 10 days of Bhishma.

Maybe because Sanjaya's sessions with Dhritarashtra were almost of same lengths and he tried to fit in as much details as possible in the given amount of time.
Now you know what was Sanjay up to during the Kurukshetra war based on various consistent references from the book. You need not rely on cinematic adaptations which probably took some liberties because of the medium.

How did Bhishma die? - did he really drop his weapons?

Anyone with the memory of watching B R Chopra's Mahabharata would remember the 10th day of battle when Shikhandi rode with Arjuna on his chariot. Looking at Shikhandi, Bhishma dropped his bow and then Arjuna hiding behind Shikhandi shot countless arrows at his grandfather forcing him to fall on the ground on the bed of arrows.

Did you ever wonder that Shikhandi was in battle since day 1 and had come face to face against Bhishma on multiple occasions, so why did Bhishma wait for 10 days to drop his bow on mere sight of Shikhandi?

Well, you are not alone. Also this is not how it happened as per the text. Let's explore what exactly happened on the 10th day of Kurukshetra war.Image Source: Mahabharata by B R Chopra
The night before

After the destruction caused by Pitamah on the 9th day Yudhishthira was really worried. He decided to meet Pitamah and ask for his advice on how to bring him down. Yudhishthira along with Shrikrishna and Arjuna went to meet the grandfather.

Pitamah told Yudhishthira that he cannot go down unless he wants to and now he believes his time has come. He then informs Yudhishthira about one warrior fighting in the Pandava army whom Bhishma would never strike with his arrows, since he was born a woman - Shikhandi. He also told them that only Arjuna had the capability of bring him down.
Battle plan

Based on the information shared by Bhishma the night before Pandava prepared their formation around Shikhandi. In the Vyuha used by Devas (Deva Vyuha), Pandava kept Shikhandi at their head and Bhima and Arjuna were protectors of his chariot. Rest of the army was spread around them to always keep Shikhandi in front of Bhishma.

Duryodhana also knew that Bhishma would never strike Shikhandi (Bhishma had informed him at the beginning of the war); so the Kaurava army was arranged in Asura formation to counter Pandava's Deva formation with Drona and Ashwatthama as Pitamah's protectors. Dusshasan was responsible for engaging Shikhandi to make sure he does not harm Bhishma.

Both the armies knew about the situation between Shikhandi and Bhishma and prepared themselves accordingly.

Why did Bhagwan Parashuram curse Karna?

The simple answer is - because Karna lied to him.

However people often try to analyse this and someone manage to paint this curse as unfair and paint Karna as a sympathetic figure. What exactly happened though?

Let's examine.Image
After being refused the knowledge of Brahmastra from his guru Drona, Karna went to Mahendragiri and approached Bhagwaan Parshuram. Karna told Bhagwaan Parshuram that he is a Brahmin of Bhrigu’s lineage.

There was no reason for Karna to lie to Bhagwaan Parshuram here. Many people claim that Karna had to lie to Bhagwaan Parshuram, because he taught only Brahmins and would have refused to accept Karna as his student had he approached him with his true identity.Image
First of all, this claim itself is inaccurate because one of the most famous disciples of Bhagwaan Parshuram during Mahabharata era was Bhishma, who was a Kshatriya and not a Brahmin.

Even if you consider Bhishma as a special case for being the son of Ganga, another disciple of Bhagwan Parashuram mentioned in Mahabharata is Rukmi.

In fact Bhagwan Parashuram's animosity towards the Kshatriyas is a thing of the distant past during Mahabharata era. Amba's grandfather Hotravahan is mentioned to be his good friend.

Time dilation in our scriptures

What is time dilation?

Time dilation is the difference in elapsed time as measured by two clocks, either due to a relative velocity between them (special relativity), or a difference in gravitational potential between their locations (general relativity).

This concept was very effectively demonstrated cinematically when a much younger looking Cooper (Character played by Matthew McConaughey) meet his much older looking daugher Murph (played by Jessica Chastain). The reason both the characters aged differently was because of time dilation.

There are multiple stories in our scriptures which capture similar concept and in this thread we will talk about those stories.Image
Muchukunda's Sleep

When Muchukunda was invited by Indra to lead the army of Gods in the Devasura sangram, he fought alogside them for one year. When he wanted to return home after this time, he was informed by Indra that many generations have passed on earth and there is nobody of Muchukunda's generation alive.

Muchukunda asked for a boon of uninterrupted sleep and Indra granted the boon adding that anyone who awakens him from his sleep will burn to ashes.

Many years later Shrikrishna uses this boon to his advantage for making Kalayavan the victim of this boon.

Watch our two part series on Muchukunda for more details.

Balaram's wife Revati

Revati's father could not find a suitable match for his highly accomplished daughter so he visited Brahmaloka to seek his advice. During his visit to Brahmaloka, he was informed that this trip of his has caused many generations to pass on earth and now nobody he knew is alive.

Brahmadev advised the king of seek Balaram as a suitable groom for his daughter. Ravati's father did as advised. Balaram accepted the match however Revati being from a different yuga was much taller than Balaram. Balaram tapped his plough gently on her shoulder to bring her down to his stature.Image Source: https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O432325/balarama-and-revati-painting-unknown/

Stories of Chadravamsha - The First of the Chandravamshis - Story of Pururava and Urvashi

After Sudyumna, Ila and Budha's son Pururava became the king. He was an illustrious king who was famous even among the gods. Apsara Urvashi had heard about his fame and was infatuated with him.

Once Urvashi with her friend Chitralekha was visiting earth and she got kidnapped by an asura named Keshi. Pururava heard Chitralekha's screaming and came for the rescue. Pururava chased Keshi and rescued Urvashi.Pururava and Urvashi by Raja Ravi Varma
After this encounter both Uravshi and Pururava were smitten by each other.

Once during a performance in Indraloka directed by Bharat Muni, Urvashi, who was playing the role of Devi Lakshmi mentioned Pururava's name instead of Narayana. This angered Bharat Muni, who cursed her to live with this human whom she was so smitten by and bear children with him.

This curse felt like a boon to Urvashi, who was too happy to get a chance to spend time with Pururava. However she always knew that one day she would have to leave him and return to heaven, so before agreeing to their union she presented her conditions to Pururava.
Urvashi's first condition was that Pururava would take care of and protect Urvashi's pet sheep she brought with her. Her second condition was that she should not see Pururava naked outside their bedroom.

Many years passed and gods in the heaven started missing Urvashi. They wanted her to return. So they played a trick. One night while Pururava and Urvashi were in their bedroom, Gandharvas stole Urvashi's sheep. Hearing their sound Pururava rushed to protect them, without bothering to dress up. Urvashi followed Pururava outside their bedroom and as soon as they both were out, Indra caused lightening thus making him break Urvashi's conditions.

When Karna faced Arjuna for the first time.

Karna harboured the desire to defeat Arjuna in a duel all his life. Since the time they came together during their time in Drona's ashram Karna developed a sense of competition towards Arjuna.

This desire made him quit Drona's ashram and approach Bhagwan Parashuram. This was his demand when he gate-crashed the Rangabhumi where Hastinapur princes had gathered to demonstrate their skills.

His desire to face Arjuna was fulfilled for the first time when he along with other failed suitors decided to attack Draupadi's father and brothers.Source: https://ar.pinterest.com/pin/tales-of-yore--558727897495862017/
When many Kings present during Draupadi's swayamvar led by Karna and Shalya decided to attack Drupada and his sons, Arjuna and Bhima, who were disguised as poor Brahmins intervened.

Arjuna took on Karna, while Bhima faced Shalya. Arjuna and Bhima facing Karna and Shalya at Draupadi Swayamvar - Gita Press
Shrikrishna had already recognised them and stopped Balaram from intervening.

So it was Arjuna vs Karna and Bhima vs Shalya; while neither Karna nor Shalya knew the true identities of the warriors they were facing. Image

Stories of Chandravamsha - the Origin

It the beginning there was Vivasvan (Sun) and we are currently living is the manvantar named after his son, Vaivaswat Manu.

Vaivaswat Manu conducted a sacrifice for Mitra-Varuna under the guidance of Brahmarshi Vashishtha to get a son but his wife secretly wished for a daughter and thus they got Ila who became Sudyumna.Image Source: https://www.hindu-blog.com/2011/12/story-of-ila.html
One day Sudyumna was out hunting and he unknowingly entered an enchanted garden. The divine garden was created by Mahadev for devi Parvati. The enchantment covering the garden would convert any man entering there into a woman.

Thus Sudyumna became Ila.
Sudyumna worshipped Mahadev and devi Parvati and asked them to be converted into a man again.

Mahadev did not reverse the enchantment completely but allowed Ila/Sudyumna to switch between a man and a woman every month. Thus for a month he was Sudyumna and then next became Ila.
