Many Jews and Israelis (including my own relatives) defend Israeli actions no matter the evidence of massacres and horrendous violence. Why?

For one simple reason: ultra nationalism.

1/7
That ultra nationalism has a name. It’s called Zionism. Even “liberal” or “progressive” Zionists think of the “Jewish state” as an end in itself. Support for a “Jewish state” has become a form of idolatry. Religious or secular, right wing or left wing, Zionism is a religion.

2/7
Ultra nationalism means that there is always a good reason to justify violence. There is always an “explanation”.

And most importantly, no matter what happens, they will *always* stand with Israel. We see it with the “stand with Israel forever” profile pics on social media.

3/7
This is why we call for the dismantling of Zionism. Not because we don't think Jews deserve self determination (we deserve self determination like everyone else). But because all ultra nationalisms are inherently oppressive, exclusionary, and violent.

4/7
And when you add colonialism on top of that, what you get is the Nakba, apartheid, and the unimaginable violence unleashed against Gaza today.

This is inevitable, and nothing will change until the cause of it all—Jewish ultra nationalism—is challenged head on.

5/7
I am so angry right now because I see people I know lose their loved ones in Gaza, murdered by Israel. And I KNOW that this would never move people I know in Israel, people in my family. Why? Because of ultra nationalism. Because of idolatry for “the Jewish state”.

6/7
As a Jew, as someone who lived in Israel and identified as Zionist most of my life, as someone who has friends & family in Israel and whose parents were in bomb shelters on Oct 7th:

Only by ending Jewish ultra nationalism (Zionism) can we reach justice in the Middle East.

The @torproject just published an insightful report on how Israel's defense and surveillance industry, which is marketed as "field-proven" on Palestinians, exports to the rest of the world and threatens privacy and human rights everywhere.

Here are some examples 🧵⬇️ Screenshot of an article titled "Surveillance as a Service: The Global Impact of Israeli "Defense" Technologies on Privacy and Human Rights" by Esra'a Al Shafei, Falestine Saleh, and dated April 8, 2024

Elbit Systems, a leading military tech exporter from Israel, has been deploying these tools at the U.S Southern Border as well as in the UAE and UK. Infographics showing how Isreal's Elbit System is used on the US Southern Border

I didn't believe it so I checked Google's AI (Gemini) myself.

🧵 A case study in erasure and dehumanization
Screenshot of an AI conversation showing the question "Who are the Israelis?" and the answer "Israelis are the citizens of the modern State of Israel, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. The majority of Israelis are Jewish, but there are also significant Arab, Druze, and Christian populations. Israel is a diverse country with a rich cultural heritage."

Screenshot of an AI conversation with the question "what is Israel?" and the answer "Israel is a country located in the Middle East, on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It's a land considered holy by three major religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Jerusalem, its claimed capital, is home to sacred sites like the Temple Mount complex, the Western Wall, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Tel Aviv, Israel's financial hub, is known for its beaches and Bauhaus architecture."

Let's put this myth to rest once and for all:

Israel didn't withdraw from Gaza in 2005 as a move towards peace. Israel withdrew to prevent peace. It's not me saying it; it's one of the Israeli leaders who led the withdrawal.

This is Dov Weisglass, senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, in an interview to Haaretz in 2004. Weisglass was one of the initiators of the disengagement plan.

"The significance of the disengagement plan is the freezing of the peace process."

He added: "And when you freeze that process, you prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state, and you prevent a discussion on the refugees, the borders and Jerusalem...

Based on my conversation with Israeli friends and relatives--including many who call themselves "progressive" and "pro-peace"--this cartoon perfectly sums up how they see things.

This shows, more clearly than ever, that only external pressure can end violence & apartheid.
1/6 Cartoon showing on one side protestors with signs saying "more 7.10!", "kill the Jews", and "from the river to the sea" and armed militants holding a bloody ace and machine gun, on the other side a seemingly clueless Israeli soldier, and in the middle a judge with a magnifying glass directed at the soldier and asking the protestors "Quiet I am looking for genocide".
To them, slogans like "from the river to the sea" or "Free Palestine" are the same as "kill the Jews" or "more October 7th!".

To them, asking for freedom and equality for all between the river and the sea can *only* mean genocide of the Jews.

To them, nonviolent protestors around the world are either active supporters of Hamas or naive fools who engage in performative activism or virtue signaling.

They see pro-Palesinian protestors and armed militants as two sides of the same coin: genocidal antisemitism.
