A few weeks ago, I had dinner with a few couples, friends of friends, all American. All were well-educated and successful in careers.
They seemed great! On the surface. For like an hour.
But slowly, over a few drinks, they began to let slip their true MAGA natures....
One of the couples each attended top ivy league colleges. But now that it was university time for their own kids, they were adamantly NOT letting them apply to any ivies. And were weird about explaining why.
Though the kids were double legacies.
Okayyy... moving on...
The next crew suddenly busted out with air quotes when mentioning climate change. Again, these are otherwise smart people. Not scientists, clearly. But educated.
And the dude took seething umbrage when my friend mentioned the damage Trump had done and vowed to continue to do.
The others-- when they realized that a few in their presence came armed with (gasp) actual facts (NO!)-- quickly changed the subject and nervously said they don't want to talk politics.
They realized they would be eviscerated on all idiotic points, especially on the economy.
As it went on, my friends and I realized we were surrounded by otherwise carefully closeted MAGAts.
It's funny how the extremist or just wrong beliefs can't help but leak out, even when you least expect them, and from people you least expect.
They are out there.
This dinner continues to haunt me. They all seemed so... normal.
When I asked the couple who were my old friends how THEY didn't know, they said that in their upscale FL neighborhood, people are extremely careful not to ever broach or debate the subject.
This is not healthy.
If people don't ever talk about these things as friends and neighbors, and only live in their own warped information silos, how will they ever learn what is true or false?
How will the truth ever make them consider alternatives?
The allure of bullshit is co-opting decent minds.

The greatest thing I have heard all day is that my 83-year-old father in law got suspended from Twitter for saying he hopes “a coyote grabs Ted Cruz’s ass” while cruising the Rio Grande.
He lives in Trump country confederate-flag land and is a fearless badass.
His name is @KennethVDuncan and he grew up on a farm in Maryland to very strict parents. He went to college and wrote for the AP before working in county government.
In "powder keg" situations overseas, whenever we'd ask why the US isn't doing more to help protect the democracy supporters, the OTR answer was often that they didn't want the whole country to collapse like a house of cards.
They were afraid to add to the fire.
A legitimate concern at times, however sad, or even arguably immoral depending on current US involvement.
I think of this when we repeatedly see incidents of outrageously unnecessary force in the US against civil-rights protestors, people of color, and journalists.
Thinking of some Trump voters I know in FL. White, highly educated male professionals.
They went that way for tax reasons, but also it turns out they really hate immigrants and people of color.
They are the children of immigrants.
And they date immigrants. Undocumented ones.
These guys are European, non-Hispanic.
I see many Europeans in FL go Trump because they are highy upset about immigration issues in Paris, Rome, etc.
They feel those cities are "ruined"-- for them.
For all those lamenting that this shouldn’t be close, that Trump voters are somehow choosing the endless attack on democratic safeguards that we’ve seen—
Do NOT assume that your fellow Americans have any understanding of how this country is supposed to work, or is now working.
The conscious choice is, in many cases, the one to simply remain ignorant. To not investigate. Not read. Believe and attack without questioning.
That is the weakness.
Many Trump voters I know consume literally zero news. Not even just Fox, but zero.
When asked “well what about what Trump just said/did on...” they have no idea what is happening.
It is a bubble.
NEW: Secretary Pompeo does NOT live across the street from State, as I have seen it reported over and over again.
He lives at Fort Myer, in Virginia.
He moved there in Sept. 2018. (thread)
This is old news and I am not sure why people keep reporting he lives on the base across from State. This is WRONG.
NEW: Per multiple sources, House Dems have been trying to get numbers on how much he pays (it's obviously a sweet deal) but no one would tell them-- for YEARS.
