Modular vs Monolithic is dead.

The next era of blockchains will be defined by Horizontal vs Vertical scaling.Image
There's no doubt that the Modular vs Monolithic framework has been abused by CT.

But once upon a time it felt useful to understand blockchain scalability…

So what changed?
In short, nothing.

Modularity is a technique of horizontal scaling.

Modular chains tap into the power of multiple full nodes (i.e. machines) to build every block.

This helped the industry reason about scalability at a time when all blockchains were monolothic.Image
Today, we have modular chains (a lot of them).

But making a chain more modular ≠ more scalable

So how do we scale further?

The answer is vertical or horizontal scaling.Image
Or both.

As is the case with =nil; (@nil_foundation)

“Web3” is just a mental model. It helps us understand how and why things happen - same goes for “crypto”.

A summary of my model ⬇️
2/n “Web3 is the internet's cultural renaissance.”
3/n “It marks the beginning of a digitally-enabled paradigm for global institutions and is a direct consequence of a maturing internet native user base.”

0/ Cryptographically-ensured identities radically shift how users *think* about themselves online.

Eventually, our web3 identities will eat our real-world identities.

🧵A (long) thread on how this might come to be…
1/ Let’s begin with familiar frameworks for “identity”.

In the real-world, we think of identity as:

1. a view of oneself (abstract)
2. the collection of our legally registered identifiers (concrete)
2/ Our abstract understanding of identity is rooted in beliefs of who we *perceive* we are.

For example…

“My name is Avi Zurlo. I’m a crypto-enthusiast. I’m Jewish. I’m a good VC.”
