It’s here. And it’s beautiful. Image

Some quick observations:

It’s basically an expanded version of the Blessed Be God prayer book, which, presumably, was a shortened form of this book. It includes the Ordinary of the Latin Mass, Sunday Prime and Compline for morning and evening prayer, Sunday Vespers, the complete Mass propers for all Sundays and major feasts of the year, the Requiem Mass, tons of devotions. In short, it’s everything trads could ever want in a prayer book that isn’t a hand missal focused primarily on liturgical texts for every day of the year.
(3)

It’s a retypeset edition of a pre-54 edition of this manual. So it has the added prefaces of St. Joseph and the Dead that wouldn’t have been in the original 1888 edition. The feast of the Sacred Heart is included. St. Joseph is NOT mentioned in the Canon. It still refers to the octaves of Epiphany, Ascension, Corpus Christi, and the Sacred Heart, all of which were suppressed in 1955. The Gospel for Palm Sunday is the pre-56 full version with the Last Supper included rather than the abbreviated text used in 56 and 62. The rest of Holy Week is not included for the sake of space. The only non-trad things are the inclusion of the new calendar alongside the old (don’t worry; it’s never referenced again in the book) and the fasting discipline has been updated to the current American discipline where the traditional fast days outside of Ash Wednesday, Lenten Fridays, and Good Friday are listed as “recommended” instead of as obligatory.

This earns my highest recommendation after only 15 minutes of skimming. I know it’s pricy ($70 before tax is the list price), but if you can, buy it. Buy another copy for a loved one. Show @TANBooks that we are oh so grateful for them investing in the effort to retypeset, bind (in a beautiful imitation leather with gold edged pages), and offer this. Make them have to run multiple additional printings.

TAN’s given us THE trad prayer book. Show them we appreciate it!

We are about to witness what might be a once-in-a-lifetime event on Wednesday: the solemn consecration in the traditional rite of a new Catholic parochial church here on American soil.

For those who wish to pray the Office in solidarity w/the SSPX in St. Mary's, a thread:

Tomorrow evening, per the rubrics for the consecration of a church, the relics of the saints will be exposed on the high altar. All clergy present will chant Matins of the martyrs as a solemn vigil of preparation. (cont)

On Wednesday, the day of the consecration, the Office of the day (in this case, ferial office in Paschaltide) is recited through None inclusive (anticipated, if possible, so that None concludes before the actual consecration begins at 9 a.m. CDT). (cont)

Someday, someone needs to write a book on the abject failure of the Catholic apologetics movement (Keating, Akin, Catholic Answers, etc.) of the late 80s and 90s. That entire movement was predicated on the notion that we would always have an (ostensibly) "conservative" pope. (ct)
(2)

W/o JP2, that movement would have been DOA. Even during B16's pontificate, we started to see the fundamental error of relying on Biblical prooftexting to convince Protestants of the truth of Catholicism, esp. in wake of the sex abuse scandal. (cont)
(3)

Even setting aside the fact that the present pontificate has murdered that movement, does anyone *really* want to argue the Church is in a new golden age of conversions in the year 2023? And just how well did the conversions of the 80s and 90s actually take? (cont)
