After looking for a job for some time I went to local equivalent of Job Centre as I found online that unemployed people might get free language courses. 1/
The lady gave me proper bollocking for not claiming my job seekers allowance. I told her it must be mistake, how can I be entitled to job seekers allowance if it was me who quit a job and if I haven't worked in Finland even one full year yet. 2/
Turns out if you quit your job you are not entitled to job seekers benefit only for the first few weeks. And as for the latter she was like "what do you mean, you paid your social insurance for 10 months, this is what the social insurance is for" The minimum period is 6 months /3
So to my surprise I ended up with receiving Finnish jobseekers allowance, a sum about as high as the weekly Universal Credit payment I would get if I was unemployed in Scotland. /4
Except that I got this sum for every DAY of unemployment, not for every WEEK. And the limit of days I could claim it for officially is 300 working days.
The contrast in the welfare systems is astonishing. /5
And, btw, I am full time student of Finnish now on a government organized course now. It's supposed to last till February. I am expected to be on communicative level required for an everyday work after completing it. /6
The government does not considers it as a handout but as an investment, kind of vocational training because (even though I already worked here) how am I expected to get a job if I don't speak the language fluently? /7
The course is well organized, there is 18 of us in the class, we are given books and other materials, the class has quality multimedia equipment, there is free coffee, we learn not only the language but history, culture, work environment related things and we go for excursions /8
This summer we are expected to get one month long work placement to practice our Finnish in real life.
I am struggling a bit as since I tried to learn some Finnish on my own they put me straight to the second level and I seem to be lagging behind the rest of the group /9
But well, I am literally paid a 100 euros per day to study so I am just going to work hard. And the teacher set aside one afternoon per week to sit with me one-to-one and help me catch up.
/10
But you know what shocked me the most?
I jokingly told some of my Finnish friends that I am a benefit scrounger. One of them got slightly offended by this. Why? He thought I think the Finnish social system is some money giveaway. He gave me a long lecture that it is not. /11
It is a well designed social security system, it's aim is not only to provide security net but also to invest in a citizen of the country so they can get back on their feet and acquire new skills that will allow them to give back to the society.
/12
Some others simply did not understood this term and were quite shocked when I explained this is how they call benefit claimants in Britain.
So that's for it.
Compare the two threads and weep.

P.S. sometimes I speak with some right wingers from Britain (or Poland) who try to tell me how bad socialism is. Whenever I bring up Finland, the conversation goes down exactly as in this meme:
Ah. One more thing. I am here for over 18 months now. I complained extensively about Finnish bureaucracy and other things (as there is a lot to complain about and being Polish, complain I do).
Not a single time I heard "if you don't like it go back to Poland / Scotland".

An interesting discussion is brewing up between Poland and Ukraine.
We all want Ukraine wants to join Europe in all ways possible. So some years ago they started building a standard gauge railway. It was supposed to reach Lviv by last year.
Now, the new idea of Ukrainian minister of agriculture is for Poland to build a Russian gauge railway from Ukrainian border to ports in Gdańsk, as well as in Klaipeda in Lithuania.
Minister Solski argues that Ukraine has more grain-carrying rail cars than all of Europe combined, so it would make the large scale transport easier - the issue here is not just a rail gauge but loading gauge too: Russian-standard rail vehicles are taller and wider, so... (3)
I don't buy this bullshit with "Russian people don't protest against Putin because they are afraid to die". Do you know why?
They volunteer to go to special military operations in their thousands. Knowing what survival rates are. 1/x
That means they are not afraid of dying. They are willing to die for Putin, or for money - as I guess this is a major incentive to sign for the army as pay in Russia is so shit that if you are from some shithole in the middle of nowhere, it's the only chance to make some... 2/x
...money you might ever have in your life.
But if for someone risking one's life to fight for freedom and hope that even if you die their kids will have a better life is "too much of a risk", but risking their life to fight against the freedom of Ukrainians and hope that... 3/x
You might have noticed that many pro-Ukrainian pundits and self proclaimed "Eastern Europe experts" have recently came attacking the new Polish government for their take over of public media, accusing them of destroying a valuable TV channel TVP World.
This is my take on this 🧵
So let's paint the background here. TVP was formerly a polish public broadcaster, a Polish equivalent to BBC so to speak. After PIS took power in 2015 they conducted an illegal takeover of Polish public media and turned them into an awful party propaganda tool. It needs to be /1
"recovered" and repaired so it can serve as a reliable source of as impartial information as possible. I explained this in detail in my recent piece for @WCountryVoices, you can read it here:
WHAT ARE THE PROTESTS ON POLISH-UKRAINIAN BORDER ABOUT? EXPLAINER THREAT:
1. How road transport in the EU works (simplified)
Transport companies from any country could transport stuff inside their own country, or between any two countries in the EU. They can't transport 1/x
goods within other EU country (that is cabotage, but there are some exceptions.
2. How road transport between EU and non-EU countries work (simplified)
Transport companies from non-EU countries can only transport goods between EU and their country - so imports and exports 2/x
To do so they usually have to get special permits. This works both ways, so transport companies from EU that want to go to third countries need permits too.
Those permits are always an issue, as the numbers of them can vary and both sides always believe the other side got 3/x
In this interview, a Polish military analyst Michał Fiszer calls for Europe to stop pretending Russia invasion on Ukraine has nothing to do with us. It's worth reading if you can, if not, so I will give you some digest in English 🧵
1. "We are where Europe was in September 1939. People back then also weren't aware it's the World War. They thought "Ok, Hitler invaded Poland, but that will be eat, why would he need to go anywhere else?"
2. Meanwhile Russians are telling us they are planning to go further West. They officially have discussions with academics on prime time TV "after we take over Ukraine and Poland, should we go West or South from there"?
