A “razor” is a rule of thumb that simplifies decision-making.

7 razors that are more useful than a $50,000 philosophy degree: Image
The Sunk Cost Fallacy

Don’t waste time on something because you’ve already spent a long time on it.

What you've invested is irrelevant to whether you should continue investing.

Remove attachment to past decisions.
The Dunning-Kruger Effect

The less competent someone is, the more they overestimate their competence.

The novice who claims mastery is forever trapped.

True experts know the limits of their knowledge.

Stay humble.
Occam's Razor

When faced with competing hypotheses, choose the one with the fewest assumptions.

Do simple better instead of overcomplicating your life.

Occam's Razor cuts through complexity.

This explanation from @sahilbloom is perfect:
Hanlon's Razor

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity.

Most mistakes and failures are due to incompetence, not ill intent.

Assume good faith first.

This razor allows you to keep the peace when life gets crazy.

@leecronin using this razor in action:
Grice's Razor

In conversation, say only what is true, relevant, and clear.

Avoid deception, irrelevance, ambiguity, and verbosity.

Quality communication is concise and honest.

Hitchen's Razor

What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

The burden of proof is on the one making the claim.

Hitchen's Razor cuts down unfounded arguments and superstition.

Demand data, not conjecture.
The Arena Razor

This is something I learned at a young age.

Pay more attention to people who have skin in the game and face the consequences of failure.

Ignore the pundits and commentators.

@jordanbpeterson talks about this in his self-help advice:
To become someone who makes money and succeeds in the modern world, you need to develop a mind that can study the past to predict the future.

If you look around, you’ll see these Razors everywhere in your life.

Use them to make the world more comprehensible.

The most effective Anti-Depressants aren't:

Prozac. Xanax. Marijuana.

It's something much more common, and anyone can get it instantly.

If you're depressed, try one of these 9 natural Anti-Depressants: Image
Vitamin D

Low vitamin D levels are linked to depression.

Getting enough sunlight or taking supplements can boost your mood.

Aim for 10-30 minutes of sun exposure daily or 1000-2000 IU of vitamin D3 supplements.
Exercise

Regular exercise is as effective as antidepressants for some people.

It releases endorphins, reduces stress, and improves self-esteem.

Start with just 30 minutes a day and gradually increase.

Find an activity you enjoy and do it daily.

Most people struggle to make good decisions...

And wonder why they don't get what they deserve.

It doesn't have to be this way.

10 super effective mental models to never make a bad decision again: Image
The Pareto Principle

Also known as the 80/20 rule.

In many areas, roughly 80% of effects come from just 20% of causes.

Identify the vital few inputs that account for the majority of outputs.

Focus relentlessly on those to maximize your productivity.
Occam's Razor

A classic but powerful mental model.

When faced with competing explanations, the simplest one is often correct. Simple theories are easier to verify than complex ones.

I heard something Ray Dalio said a few years ago that changed my worldview:

“If you compare two people with equal opportunities when it comes to money, it’s delayed gratification that separates them.”

Why this is so significant: Image
Dalio came from humble beginnings.

His intro to investing was caddying at a local golf course, where he'd carry bags for Wall Street pros.

This led to his first investment at age 12, which tripled in value.

After some beginner’s luck, Dalio was hooked on investing.
Dalio later founded Bridgewater Associates from his two-bedroom apartment.

It's now the largest hedge fund in the world, with big clients like McDonald's, The World Bank, and Kodak.

Dalio's net worth stands at $19.1 billion.

Parkinson's Law

Work expands to fill the time available, and because of this, most people aren’t doing anything productive with their time.

Give yourself less time than you think you need.

Embrace the power of a deadline.

Here’s a great breakdown by @AliAbdaal:
Occam's Razor Paradox

The simplest explanation is often the right one.

If something seems too complicated, it probably is simpler than you think.

Challenge yourself to distill, not to embellish.

I like how AI professor Marcus Hutter breaks this idea down below:
