We're beginning #teachingcodex with a set of panel presentations. First up is Mulaika Hijjas from @SOAS speaking on 'Community-sourcing as hybrid philology'
There are about 10,000 surviving Malay MSS, earliest are C15, most are C19. Things need to be recopied constantly because of the climate. #teachingcodex
#teachingcodex Image
Most Malay MSS are written in a modified form of Arabic called Jawi. Script changed in mid C20.
So there's a disjunct with lots of older literature. #teachingcodex
Jawi was taught in schools until 1980s, last newspaper went out of print in 2006. #teachingcodex
There are fewer and fewer opportunities to teach Jawi. Take opportunities to insert it into curriculum, e.g. in a course on environmental humanities about elephants! Image
The hybridity here is finding ever more surreptitious ways of continuing the field! Text editions are not popular with the REF. #teachingcodex Image
Project on community sourcing transcription, in-person and online, using From the Page. Members of the public turned up, & who they were depended on the venue: Singapore National Library produced different participants from heritage organisations or indie bookshops elsewhere.
#teachingcodex Mulaika is now showing us a video of one of the transcribers on the project performing one of the texts.
The community-sourced translation has resulted in this book. Text collected in 1804, and it's been in the British Library, unread. Now it's available in affordable copy & reached the top 5! #teachingcodex Image
This matters! It's about reading the texts, not just talking about them. Teaching AND co-creation of knowledge #teachingcodex

Finally we're hearing from @HLaehnemann, Professor of Medieval German, who says her first paper after arriving in Oxford was at the first #teachingcodex colloquium – and it was on the meeting of material and digital, so we've come full circle
Started me reaching out beyond Oxford, having students reflect digitally. Covid cohort in particular! #teachingcodex
That was borne out of pandemic necessity, but it started us making the Oxford holdings available to a much wider audience. We could invite experts from all around world! #teachingcodex

Now we're hearing from Andrew Honey, book conservator at the @bodleianlibs #teachingcodex
You don't need to be able to *read* the text in order to understand books as objects #teachingcodex
What do we mean by hybridity? The idea of 'mixed character' seems of most interest. The composite nature of the items studied and complexity that brings out? How to get students to think beyond presenting something *as a text* #teachingcodex

Next up in the #teachingcodex round table is @MatthewHolford, Tolkien Curator of Medieval Manuscripts
Large part of role is facilitating teaching by others, but also teaching aspects which aren't covered in formal faculty curriculum
First question: who gets to come into the Bodleian and see these objects? Small number of self-selecting people #teachingcodex

Now it’s time for our #teachingcodex round table feat ⁦@HLaehnemann⁩ ⁦@olde_bookes⁩ ⁦@MatthewHolford⁩, Andrew Honey, and chaired by our co-founder Tristan Franklinos Image
First up @olde_bookes is showcasing Trinity College MS 29 #teachingcodex, a universal history of the world in Middle English and Latin, compiled in C15
@olde_bookes #teachingcodex Hybridity is relevant in that it's compiled from MS and print sources. Transition from MS to print culture is not one-directional.

Our final #teachingcodex presentation for this panel is from Laure Miolo on 'Teaching with manuscripts and instruments'. She's brought an astrolabe with her!
Laure is a historian of late medieval Europe, specialising in manuscript studies and history of early libraries with a special focus on scientific books #teachingcodex
Those who specialise in medieval instruments tend to come from scientific background; those who work on MSS tend to be trained in history. Corresponding differences in teaching #teachingcodex

Our next speaker is @sian_witherden, talking on 'Teaching hybridity with blog posts'. Sian works now in the rare books trade.
#teachingcodex Before this, Sian worked on a manuscript digitisation project at @StJohnsOxLib
@StJohnsOxLib Here's a taste of their digital library #teachingcodex Image
