🧵of 11 re #GazaGenocide‌

Dr Amy Neilson, Australian Dr. just returned from Gaza, on #newsbreakfast:
"I have provided aid in these regions across the world under the auspices of international humanitarian law, of the rules of war, which allow you access to different regions.../2 Image
2. "...and allow you to function while you're in those regions. In Gaza, what is happening right now is that Israel is violently failing to abide by the most basic rules of war, and what I saw and what I lived is a consequence of that. /3
3: "The access to the region is very limited; people cannot get in & out. Their aid supplies are not getting in & out; there isn't water, there isn't safe drinking water, there isn't food, there isn't fuel, there isn't medical supplies.../4
4. "The health system has been attacked egregiously, again in ways that I have just absolutely never seen, extraordinary amounts of devastation of hospital structures, medical colleagues detained, murdered, missing. The people are doing what they can... /5
5. "I was with a team at a trauma stabilisation point, in a tent, with some rolled up medical gear... some of that is trauma patients, some of that is patients who experience some of the longer consequences of their wounds from the last many months.../6
6. "..extraordinary non-healing ulcerative wounds across their bodies affecting their most basic life functions... diarrhea... jaundice... hepatitis A... diabetes but no insulin, they're dying of normal medical conditions... that medical care is respected is absolutely gone.../7 Image
7. "I believe this to be a genocide. The consequences are the continuing decimation of Gaza, of Palestine, and the continuing loss of any form of life for the Palestinian people. /8 Image
8. "People are not only experiencing this extraordinary violence which needs to stop in terms of a ceasefire, but they are living under this siege which needs to stop. Their life is kind of going going gone for a lot of people.../9
9. "... they describe not being able to plan, not being able to hope. Schools have been bombed, again, returning to the basics of the rules of war, this isn't just a war between combatants; this is a war on the civilians of Gaza.../10
10. "The consequence for this to go on will be the increased loss of life of civilians of Gaza, and increased inability to function; children won't go to school, universities have been bombed, medical care which is down from a trickle to a drip will become nothing at all." /11

#StudentProtests 8-part thread🧵

On #ABCnews: Dr. Elizabeth Strakosch, Melbourne Uni lecturer & spokesperson for Jewish Council of Australia:

"To be honest I feel quite proud of the students... I myself have gone to the encampment and been welcomed there.../2 Image
2. "... others feel uncomfortable with it but my strong opinion is that that's a political discomfort, that that's not because there's any racism, these are peaceful encampments, they're being very clear that they won't tolerate any anti-semitism.../3
3. "... and political discomfort with opinions that we deeply disagree with is part of life in a democracy...
What really concerns me as a question of safety is that we've seen a lot of right wing protesters and agitators from outside the university coming into the camp.../4

David McBride's lawyer Mark Davis on #ABC:
"We were all shocked, the whole room was shocked actually...a good number were expecting a control order of some sort, no-one, no-one anticipated a sentence of this duration... /2
2. "... no harm was established on the McBride material...no harm came from David McBride, there was no personal gain for David McBride. all these sort of things that would normally aggravate a sentence weren't there in our view.../3
3. "... [he's] frankly in shock, he is heading to jail for a long time, it's not a lifetime but for a 60 year old man, almost three years in jail is a significant part of his life; it's the last years of his children's childhood.../4

1/4: More vacuous LNP stunts today in #qt.

Angus Taylor yesterday wrote to the Speaker proposing a "definite matter of public importance" (MPI) be submitted to the house for discussion: 'This government driving Australia into a per capita recession.' " /2 Image
2: During #qt 4 LNP members manage to get ejected. Towards the end, Angus Taylor confers with Peter Dutton before making a completely vexatious point of order - apparently in an attempt to be ejected so that he doesn't have to give the MPI speech.

Milton Dick rolls his eyes. /3

3. Tony Bourke outlines the conferring between Dutton & Taylor, and says: "I suggest the member for Hume in the interest of the House should be allowed to stay."
Speaker Milton Dick with a wry smile: "Because I'm feeling generous, the Minister will cease interjecting." /4 Image

Dan Andrews in response to Peta Credlin’s insistent questions and interruptions today (15/10/2020):

“You’ve all got a job to do, but let me tell you one thing my job does not involve, and it will never involve: having patently incorrect statements made to me where I ...
2/4 …simply cop it and move on to the next question. I’m not doing that. The stakes are too high when it comes to keeping people safe for me to simply be a bystander as facts are created and as history is re-written. I will not do that, not now, not ever....
3/4 ... Are there any other questions on any matters that relate not to months and months and months ago, that are the subject of a duly formed, independent inquiry under an Act of the Victorian Parliament...
