Wolverine Reading Order 🧵

Wolverine has the most confusing history out of all Marvel characters and it’s very hard to catch up on it. That’s why I created this reading order so people not familiar with Wolverine’s comics can catch up on his character history. Image
1. Wolverine: The Origin by Paul Jenkins

The beginnings of James Howlett are explored. How he got the name Logan, his powers and the name Wolverine are all included here. Reading this helped me understand Wolverine much better in his later years. That’s why it’s recommended. Image
2. Origin II by Kieron Gillen

This series immediately follows the aftermath of Wolverine: The Origin and further fleshes out Wolverine as an adult while introducing many of his greatest enemies like Sabretooth and Mister Sinister. Image
3. Wolverine: Origins Annual #1 by Daniel Way

This issue depicts Wolverine’s first visit to Madripoor and the first appearance of his other persona Patch. This takes place right after Origin II and explains how Logan’s history with Madripoor started. Image
4. Wolverine Vol. 2 #10 & #62-65 by Larry Hama

These issues explore Wolverine’s relationship with Silver Fox after he returns to Canada from Madripoor. It’s not detailed and most information is left vague but the general idea behind their relationship is shown. Image
5. Wolverine Vol. 3 #57-58 by Marc Guggenheim

One of the big wars Wolverine took part in was WW1. There, Wolverine meets the Angel of Death who was one of the killers active during the war. This era of Wolverine sets up his later adventures in Japan and his role in WW2 Image
6. Wolverine: Get Mystique! (Vol.3 #62-65) by Jason Aaron

Through flashbacks, Wolverine’s history with Mystique in the 1920s is explored. This book is one of the best Wolverine stories and explains the origins of Wolverine and Mystique’s rivalry. Image
7. Wolverine: Origins #16-20 by Daniel Way

In these issues, Wolverine’s role alongside Captain America in WW2 is told. This is the first meeting between both characters who grow to respect each other. WW2 is important to Wolverine’s history and these issues set up later stories Image
8. Logan by Brain K. Vaughan

This book explores the first time Logan ever went to Japan and how he settled in. Japan is an important part of Logan’s history and this book is crucial to understanding how he got there in the first place. Image
9. Wolverine: Bloodsport (Vol.2 #167-169)

This event depicts Wolverine finally beating his former master Ogun for good. Ogun was Wolverine’s father figure in Japan. The comic features numerous flashbacks to Logan’s time with Ogun who trained him after WW2. Image
10. Wolverine: Origins & Endings (Vol.2 #38-40) by Daniel Way

This explores the time Wolverine was training under Ogun. In the present day, Wolverine is searching for a killer who wronged him. The flashbacks specifically explore Logan’s marriage to his Japanese wife Itsu. Image
11. Wolverine Origins #35 by Daniel Way

This takes places immediately after the events in Origins & Endings where Logan witnesses the creation of the Murasama Blade. Image
12. Web of Venom: Ve’nam #1 by Donny Cates

Here you will find Nick Fury’s stupidest decision ever which had him bonding soldiers to Symbiotes to create his own super-soldiers during the Vietnam War. These Symbiote-Soldiers needed to be kept in check and that was Wolverine’s job. Image
13. Wolverine: Origins #6- 9 by Daniel Way

Wolverine spent some time with Team X and these issues go in detail about some missions Wolverine went on with Team X. This also includes Wolverine becoming aware of Omega Red for the first time. Image
14. X-Men Vol. 2 #5-7

This immediately follows Wolverine becoming aware of Omega Red while with Team X and has the actual first confrontation between Wolverine and Omega Red. His history with Team X is also further explained. Image
15. Wolverine: Wolverine’s Revenge (Vol.4 #10-14) by Jason Aaron

Wolverine is confronted in the present day by the Red Right Hand, a group of individuals Wolverine wronged in the past. This organization employed individuals called the Mongrels, who are connected to Logan’s past. Image
16. Logan: Shadow Society by Howard Mackie

While serving Canada’s Department K, Logan and young Carol Danvers meet for the first time to fight the Hellfire Club. This is also Logan’s first meeting with Sebastian Shaw. More importantly, Logan discovers about mutants. Image
17. Wolverine: Weapon X by Barry Windsor-Smith

This book details Wolverine’s Adamantium bonding and brainwashing by the Weapons Plus Program. This is one of the most important books to read if you want to understand Wolverine. Image
18. Wolverine: Season One by Ben Acker & Ben Blacker

This comic is about Wolverine becoming a man again after escaping Weapons Plus and him joining Canada’s Department H. Wolverine also fights Hulk for the first time and has his first meeting with Professor Charles Xavier. Image
19. Incredible Hulk #181 by Wein

This is the famous first comic appearance of Wolverine. The events of this issue are included in Wolverine: Season One but if you want the original thing, this is what you should read. Image
20. Giant-Size X-Men by Chris Claremont

Chris Claremont revolutionizes the X-Men comics by introducing a newer iteration of the team featuring many notable characters. One of them being none other than Wolverine. It’s a basic story but it’s definitely a good and necessary read. Image
21. Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont

After introducing the new team, Claremont officially takes over the main X-Men series and has an incredible run for 16 years. This series is what made Wolverine who he is and set up future comics for Logan. His run starts with #94. ‘God Loves, Man Kills’ is a canon graphic novel and is not part of the Uncanny X-Men run.
And that’s it if you want to know about Wolverine’s long life. There’s still of course a lot more that follows when he joins the X-Men but that is easy to catch up on. Everything about his backstory you should be aware now.
If you want another reading order specifically about his time after joining the X-Men, I can for sure make one since there’s a lot of important events yet to come.

Thank you for reading and follow for more.
