NEW Voter purge in Ohio and a 💨 gun

A 🧵

As part of his latest round of purging of voters from the rolls, Ohio’s Secretary of State tweeted the following 👇 yesterday

1/
What Frank doesn’t tell you is that a few years ago, when he released a list of voters “to be purged,” outside groups (not his staff) found that the list included 10,000s of voters on it in error

These voters HAD voted regularly, hadn’t moved, but were tagged to be purged

2/
..anyway.

Overall, it was a near 20% error rate. Shockingly high.

And again, it was only found because outside groups dug through LaRose’s list and found that enormous number of voters mistakenly listed—which was caused by a combination of errors in the process and data

3/
Embarrassed, LaRose blamed others for the gaffes, pointing fingers at vendors and local county boards of elections for the mistakes.

Still, despite how clear it was that the purging process was wildly inaccurate, LaRose proceeded to purge voters anyway.

4/
And to no one’s surprise, more voters were later found to have been purged in error. Again, identified by outside groups and lawmakers.

And right now, another purge is happening.

So why do I bring up LaRose’s tweet from above?

5/
Because he wrote the words that his purging process is “more accurate[]” than before.

Now that’s a hell of an admission!

Because if his 20% error rate (only detected by those outside his analytics team) is MORE accurate than before…

6/
…he’s admitting that, out of the millions of Ohio voters purged over the past decade+ (from lists that were never seen, and therefore never scanned for mistakes) at least 100,000s of Ohioans were purged in error.

7/
And THAT means we’ve suffered a major league attack on Ohio’s electorate and democracy over all this time, especially when we know that the purging process has had a disproportionate impact on voters in our major cities and communities of color.

8/
20% inaccuracy, in any field, is terrible.

When it comes to voters being purged at the scale we’re talking about, it’s downright stomach churning.

And LaRose’s tweet now admits it used to be even worse!

9/
One final thing: LaRose now touts his release of a new list as a sign of transparency.

The truth is, it’s obviously necessary when his office’s own track record has been so bad in the past—and it’s been the outside groups that catch his team’s mistakes.

10/
But what he again doesn’t tell you is that the way he releases these lists—without the Secretary of State’s voter identifier numbers included—he makes it far more difficult for outside groups to scan these lists quickly and broadly to find the same type of…

11/
…mistakes they have found in the past.

So yes, individual voters can and should go here to see if they’ve been purged:

But LaRose’s crack data team should also release the list in a way that best allows outside…

12/RegistrationReadiness.OhioSoS.gov
…groups to quickly search for and find the mass mistakes that LaRose’s team made before.

Not doing that is, once again, a bad sign about this entire, rotten process.

As if they want to make it harder to detect the egregious mistakes they made just a few years back.

13/
Finally, there’s an easy way to correct all this. These days, there are lists generated on a regular basis of Ohioans who have moved and Ohioans who have passed away.

Those are the triggering events to be removed from voting rolls.

14/
So of course use THOSE lists to keep OH’s voting rolls clean, like most states

To use a formula of infrequent voting as a proxy for who’s moved and/or passed away is simply a bad system—guaranteeing that far more people will be caught up in the purging process than should

15/
…be. And opening the door to all the errors Ohio has experienced.

So…check to be sure you haven’t been purged. Demand that LaRose release a list that groups can more easily search. And demand, long term, that Ohio cease purging infrequent voters once and for all.

END

OH Ballot Update: Ohio’s Trickle-Up Lunacy

A 🧵

How do you lose in court? First, you listen to bad lawyers over good lawyers.

Even worse, that bad lawyer says something as dumb as this to justify violating core Constitutional rights.

WATCH, RT and..

1/
Then, when a good lawyer (of your own party) tries to warn you that you are about to invite a losing lawsuit, you simply ignore him.

As happened here:

2/
Last week, by listening to that bad lawyer over that good lawyer, the Ohio House GOP, Ohio Senate and Governor may very well have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory (in their effort to gut ballot initiatives) by making Ohio the first state in America to…

BREAKING!

The DNC & @harrisonjaime just called the OH Senate & Gov DeWine’s bluff by moving up Biden’s nomination so no extension is needed to make the OH ballot.

This will expose that DeWjne and the Senate’s goal was never about Biden at all!

WATCH/RT/TAKE ACTION

1/
Just like last year, it was a cynical effort to change the rules to knee-cap ballot initiatives—including our effort to end gerrymandering this year

Currently, they are STILL moving forward on their poison pills EVEN though Biden will be nominated in time for OH’s deadline

2/
Which gives their game away.

But you can help 🛑 them.

Ohio House Republicans have held the line before last week.

Call them to encourage them to keep holding the line to protect citizens’ right to organize ballot initiatives.

No more attacks on our democracy!

Reading a great biography of Jesse James, by @TJStiles_Author

Fascinating, once placed in the post Civil War context of violent politics involving former confederates still fighting (successfully) Reconstruction and equality.

James and his posse were seen as…

1/ Image
…heroes because they represented the side still resisting the “North” years after the Civil War.

In one train robbery, they wore the white hoods of the KKK. They robbed and killed many over the years.

But post-confederate, friendly papers framed all of it as heroic….

2/
But here’s one moment in particular that may feel familiar.

At one point, as authorities were closing in on James, supportive politicians in the Missouri legislature, egged on by that media, proposed on amnesty bill for the James gang.

The Poison Pills to Democracy and Freedom DeWine Wants Ohio to Swallow

A 🧵 that might make you ill

QUESTION: Why is the behind-the-scenes leader of last August’s Issue 1 effort to kill Ohio’s direct democracy, who also led the effort to stop Ohio’s Reproductive…

1/ Image
Freedom Amendment last November—suddenly so excited with Governor Mike DeWine?

And why is JD Vance taking a break from Trump’s trial to suddenly chime in with praise for DeWine (who the far right often calls a RINO)?

2/ Image
And remember this guy, the official author of last August’s Issue 1?

Why is he so pleased with DeWine all of a sudden?

Louisiana’s statehouse voted to make abortion pills controlled dangerous substances!?

In 2024, how jn the world does a modern democracy do this?

Therein lies the problem.

Louisana’s statehouse democracy is cancelled. Literally.

Just look at its 2023 elections:

And again…

So those were the general elections.

Surely, you’re thinking, if most of the general elections were cancelled, the primaries must have been 🔥

Nah. A whole lot of them were canceled too.

NEW WHITEBOARD 💥 🎉

Running in EVERY District in Florida!!

Every. Single. One.

Have I got some great news for you on this Tuesday. And a way you can make it even better.

WATCH, RT and…

1/
But first, let me share a history & democracy lesson w you. And a math lesson.

A number.

537.

That’s how many votes Gore trailed Bush by in Florida when the Supreme Court stopped the counting in the 2000 election.

537 votes.

A margin that forever changed America:

2/ Image
And do you know what else changed America?

The fact that on that same ballot that year—just in Florida—Democrats failed to compete in seven of 23 US House seats, 8 out of 20 state senate seats, and 30 out of 120 house seats.

45 total seats!
