among those released today from #Russian captivity is Olena Pekh, a #Ukrainianart historian and Horlivka Art Museum research associate
🧵
Olena Pekh has been a Russian prisoner since 2018. She arrived in the occupied territory of Ukraine to help her sick grandmother, where she was abducted by the MGB (Ministry of State Security of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic, one of the Russian proxy republics), allegedly on suspicion of espionage for Ukraine.
Because of her patriotic pro-Ukrainian position, the Russians brutally tortured and raped the woman, leading her to attempt suicide. Later, Pekh was sentenced to 13 years in a Russian prison.
Pekh's daughter Isabella gave a couple of interviews revealing the morbid details about her mother's captivity in Russia. I am sharing the link here hromadske.radio/publications/z…
After six years of hell, and you will know that this is not an exaggeration after reading the interview linked above, Olena Pekh is finally home
But what about those Geneva Conventions? International humanitarian aid organizations and movements? Well, that's a rhetorical question, I guess, when it comes to a terrorist state involved
@ukr_arthistory Dear colleague, you have a way bigger audience here than I do. I believe this news about Olena Pekh, a Ukrainian art historian and Horlivka museum researcher, is worth spreading, after all the horrors of Russian captivity she's been through. So maybe you will be interested in spreading the word.
