The calibre of politicians who travel the well trodden path since the 90s - Oxford PPE then party staff or researcher for an MP, maybe a stint at a think-tank, lobbying or a campaign, becoming a SpAd then MP and finally Minister - is a long term issue.
Usually they are brilliant at politicking not so competent when it comes to delivering results. This is not a left-right issue. Parties should go back to looking for candidates in their late thirties, early forties who have real world experience and have managed things.
Being good at media handling and sound bites is no substitute for having the experience and proven ability to get things done. Learning on the job as a minister invariably means years of failing to deliver.
