1/ BE AMAZED! Come with me on a little journey into the bizarre. We are going to explore the Western Australian government's new "Don't Assume You're Immune" campaign to raise awareness of vaccination and see how long it takes to find a mention of COVID-19.
2/ Things start off promisingly enough with this email to all WA Health employees from the WA Director General of Health, an infectious disease physician. It says the campaign is in response to "inaccurate and false information regarding public health measures". OK, fair enough. Image
3/ Further down the email, we hear how passionate Dr Bowen is about helping people take action to keep safe and encouraging us to keep up to date with our immunisations. Here, we find two links to the new immunisation website.

This is looking promising, isn't it? Image
4/ We click through to the new immunisation website. There, our hearts beating furiously in our chests, we click on the link which takes us to "Diseases that vaccines protect us against".

Things are still going well!

Image
5/ But, lo! When we click on the link to the page of "Diseases that vaccines protect us against", we do not find COVID-19. We look for him here. We look for him there. But we do not find him anywhere! 🤷

Image
6/ Resourceful fellows that we are, however, we are not dismayed, and we go to the menu at the top right and click on that, which takes us to another menu page.

Here, we click on the menu item "Immunisation programs and schedules". Seems sensible, yes?

immunisation.health.wa.gov.au/diseases-vacci…
Image
7/ This takes us to another page, which looks like this. We scratch our heads and scroll down... Image
8/ ... which brings us to this. We click on 'Adult immunisation schedule', for here, surely we will find the information we seek about COVID-19 immunisation? Surely! Image
9/ But no! Now, despite ourselves, we are becoming dismayed. For we do not find any mention of COVID-19 in the Adult immunisation schedule.

healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/A_E/A…
Image
10/ Not even when we scroll right to... Image
11/ ... the bottom of the page! Image
12/ Gathering ourselves, we scroll back up to the top of the page and accept the option to "Read more about immunisations at the Australian Department of Health website (external site)." Image
13/ Here, at last, we will surely find the information we seek about COVID-19 vaccination!

And yes, even though this link takes us rather oddly to an 'Immunisation for adolescents' page, a flicker of hope arises as we spot the opportunity to click on a COVID-19 vaccination page Image
14/ Click on it we do, and find ourselves on an 'Immunisation resources' page with entries posted by date. Nothing here is specific to COVID-19, but we start scrolling
...and scrolling
...and scrolling Image
15/ ...and scrolling. Until, on the TWENTY FIFTH ITEM, we possibly find what we are looking for, in the form of the opportunity to download a pdf of an infographic on 'When to get your COVID vaccination'. Image
16/ With trembling hands, we click on the link, open the pdf file with Adobe Acrobat and THERE IT IS! Image
17/ I don't even think this is deliberate, because that would require an absurd level of conspiracy. I think this is the expression of a collective denial, a need to forget, to negate the very existence of this beast which threatened to rob us completely of the status quo.
18/ As COVID-19 continues to ravage the world in so many ways, causing suffering, death and chaos, I don't really know how to respond. It is all so very odd.🤷‍♂️
19/ Oh yes, and I forgot. Try searching for 'COVID' on the new immunisation website and this is what you get:

"Search results for 'covid'
We found 0 results that matched your search" Image
20/ And if we search on 'COVID-19', we get one result, which, if we click on it, it takes us back to... Image
21/ ...tweet number 7 in this thread, where we re-enter the useless loop of oblivion.

22/ As ever, the absurdity of life cannot be better expressed than it is in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Image

1/ The lesson of the Nazis, the one that has to be remembered and carried with us all forever, is that 'It could happen here'.

We have been done a dangerous disservice by the popular approval of Godwin's Law - that all Internet disputes ultimately devolve into people shouting 'Nazi' at each other.
2/ Why? Because Nazism threatens to break out at all times and in all places, and requires constant energy and vigilance to be suppressed. Godwin's Law has made us shy of using the Nazi comparison, EVEN WHEN IT IS BLATANTLY OBVIOUS. As it is with Trump and the MAGA movement.
3/ I wrote about this in 2016 in relation to Australia's treatment of non-white refugees and I stand by every word.

The Nazis are a warning from history and that warning must be heeded, and the rot stamped out wherever and whenever it arises.

1/ "The impact of various INFECTIOUS AGENTS on human survival and reproduction over THOUSANDS OF YEARS has exerted SELECTIVE PRESSURE on numerous regions of the HUMAN GENOME."

Can we please clear something up?

2/ People mistakenly say that the reason the Native Americans died of smallpox, the flu, syphillis and others is that the individuals concerned didn't have the constant exposure to them that European populations had, so had not built up immunity.
3/ This is completely wrong. All these diseases and more were huge killers in mediaeval European populations. However, constant contact with them over THOUSANDS of years meant that the overall gene pool of all Europeans had evolved to a state of higher resistance to them.

I'm not going to put any effort into refuting this point by point, because... Brandolini

But, really?! I remain baffled by the vehement objection to cleaner air generally, and in schools in particular. Can anyone come up with a coherent explanation? Image
This seems to me a much more appropriate reponse to @Hayley_Gleeson article and the outstanding work of @ColinKinner 👇
@Hayley_Gleeson @ColinKinner I mean, why on Earth would you object to improving air quality in schools? As I have said before, it is a very odd hill to decide to die on.🤷‍♀️

1/ I cannot encourage people more to log into this event this afternoon. It is one of the most critical events in improving indoor air quality since the beginning of the pandemic. Many big cheeses (grandes fromages) will be there. 🧀 See rest of thread.

1/ Couldn't be anything at all to do with the widespread prevalence of previous repeat and current COVID infection impacting the performance of these elite athletes, for whom a 1% fall in VO2 max spells disaster, could it? 🤔
2/ If you can postulate immunity debt as the reason behind the big surge in incidence and severity of other infections, but dismiss a potential direct effect of COVID out of hand, you are not a serious player.
3/ Similarly, if you can postulate the swimming pool surface as a cause of poor performance, but ignore the very real effect of mass COVID infection on the exercise capacity of elite athletes, you are not a serious player.

1/ Guys, guys, guys, this is very interesting. Look at these Boeing 737 CO2 traces from last week on Aranet4 HOME CO2 monitors, one in the cockpit and one in the back with the rest of the Self Loading Freight.
Image
Image
2/ Look at the difference between the inflight CO2 levels in the cockpit (700ppm) and the cabin (1800-2000ppm). Why is this? Because the pilots in the cockpit breathe only fresh air. They do not breathe recirculated cabin air. Image
3/ Why is this important? Two reasons. Firstly, infection risk (though inflight cabin air is HEPA filtered, somewhat decoupling CO2 level from infection risk), but secondly cognitive function. This paper demonstrated significant degradation in pilot...
