It’s increasingly obvious that much of the political press is shallow. They demand new storylines. They’re distracted by bright, shiny objects. Believe it or not, they’re bored with the fact that an unhinged fascist is poised to end American democracy. 1/9 🧵
The media’s mentality is dangerous. In past years, they’ve noted how unhinged and dangerous Trump is. Not loudly enough, but fairly often. So now when he says and does unhinged and dangerous things, they think it’s not really news anymore. At least not big news. 2/9
Part of the problem is the common definition of news. One Webster definition is “previously unknown information.” Trump called for the jailing of his 2016 rival, so when he advocates the jailing or even execution of enemies, that’s just “Trump being Trump.” Old news. 3/9
I have a different definition of news: It’s information that helps people improve their lives and that warns people of dangers. Trump and his anti-democracy party are a huge threat to our nation’s future. It’s not old news. It’s big news. The biggest. 4/9
If only the media covered Trump like they cover hurricanes. When hurricanes approach, news outlets do their duty and loudly warn people. They don’t think, “We told them about hurricanes last year. This is just ‘hurricanes being hurricanes.’” 5/9
The media’s thirst for new storylines helps explain the feeding frenzy on Biden. Conflict is the essence of storytelling. On the GOP side, it’s lockstep cultism. No conflict. On the Democratic side, a wide-open debate. Conflict. Which is why the media are all over Biden. 6/9
MAGA propagandists know the media need content. That’s why they invent new lies to control the narrative. A vigorous media would create its own pro-democracy agenda. But the right knows its lies will be instant headlines and the fact checks will come later, or never. 7/9
The news media are looking at one of the biggest stories in our nation’s history – an attempt to replace democracy with a dictatorship – and are largely missing it. And missing it not because it’s secret. They’re missing it because they’re too shallow to cover it properly. 8/9
We’re foolish if we wait for the media to save us. We must save ourselves. Talk to your family and friends. Tell them about Project 2025 and the fact that Trump uses Nazi rhetoric like “vermin” and “poisoning the blood of our country.” Get serious, because the media won’t. 9/9

Back in February, I asked a question in my Stop the Presses newsletter: “Is the New York Times neutral on the future of democracy?”
They keep answering that question In a disturbing way. stopthepresses.news/p/is-the-new-y…

I’m sure the irresponsible NYT editors who published this anti-voting piece thought they were being “inclusive” in sharing an alternative view. But would they publish my alternative view that NYT is a toxic threat to democracy?
Here’s what happened to us. 🧵
Mid-2000: Theresa LePore, elections chief in Palm Beach County, Fla., reacts to a long list of presidential candidates by devising a confusing “butterfly ballot,” a 2-page display with candidate names on alternating sides of a central punch column.
November 2000: The presidential race between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush hinges on a close vote in Florida. Fringe candidate Pat Buchanan does oddly well on Palm Beach’s “butterfly ballot.” A study later says 2,000 Gore backers mistakenly voted for Buchanan.
December 2000: Bush “wins” by 537 votes, under a Supreme Court ruling that blocks a statewide recount.
2005: Bush names Samuel Alito and John Roberts to the Supreme Court, with Roberts as chief justice.
What does “Make America Great Again” really mean? It’s nostalgia for the worst aspects of America’s past. A thread. 🧵 1. MAGA means a rollback of child labor laws.
2. MAGA means tolerance of corporate pollution, like the Love Canal disaster in New York.
After Republican Rep. Eric Burlison said today on Fox that Biden’s debate handlers might “jack him up on Mountain Dew,” I looked into the connections between the soft drink and right-wing America. Here’s a 🧵on what I found. 1/9
1940s: Mountain Dew was born in what’s now red-state America. Brothers Barney and Ally Hartman developed it in Knoxville, TN. One of its slogans was: “It’ll tickle your innards!” Pepsi-Cola bought the brand in 1964. 2/9
I’m a critic of the New York Times’ weak coverage of the rise of American fascism. But perhaps it’s my fault for irrationally wanting the Times to be better than it is or ever has been. As I note in this 🧵, there’s a long history of very wrong reporting in the Times. 1/20
In 1903, the New York Times said invention of a workable flying machine would take the “continuous efforts of mathematicians and mechanicians in from 1 million to 10 million years.” Sixty-nine days later, the Wright Brothers made their famous flight. 2/20 timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1…
A 1920 Times editorial mocked Robert Goddard for saying a rocket could exit Earth’s atmosphere and keep going. The Times said he lacked “the knowledge ladled out daily in high schools.” As Apollo 11 went to the moon in 1969, the Times ran a correction 3/20 nytimes.com/2001/11/14/new…
This is a New York Times story about Trump and the Republicans smearing Biden with video fakery.
Yet the headline not only fails to name Trump and Republicans as the cheap-shot artists but casts Biden as struggling to cope “as he battles age doubts.”
Why is NYT doing this?
The New York Times headline actually spreads the right-wing disinformation. This keeps happening with the Times. It’s becoming harder and harder to think it’s just poor judgment on the copy desk.
I mean, think about it. The reporters did all that work to expose a major Republican campaign to trick the voters, and because of the headline, the net result is a negative for the victim, Biden, who is depicted as beleaguered.
