Latest: An analysis of open source evidence, as well as multiple missile experts, have pointed to a Russian launched Kh-101 cruise missile being the weapon that struck a children’s hospital in Kyiv bellingcat.com/news/2024/07/0…
The July 8th attack on the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital has left three children dead and 16 injured according to the Security Services of Ukraine (SBU). More are thought to still be under the rubble.
Shortly after the bombing, claims began to surface on social media that Russia was being wrongly blamed for the attack and that the missile was American in origin, fired by Ukraine. @jacksonhinklle, a political activist who has appeared on Russian state media, was one such voice. Screenshot of a tweet by Jackson Hinkle claiming without evidence that the missile that hit the hospital was “an American Patriot air defense missile”. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a similar claim later in the day (Source: X/Twitter)
Bellingcat analysed social media footage of the attack from different angles, debris left behind amongst the rubble and created 3D models of both the Russian Kh-101 cruise and the US-made AIM-120 for comparison with the missile seen clearly within the footage.
This video, that first appeared on Telegram, clearly shows the missile that hit the hospital. The missile exhibits several characteristics, including the presence of what appears to be a jet engine at its rear as well as two short wings near the middle of the missile.
A screenshot from a video from a Telegram channel showing the missile near the moment of impact at the hospital (Source:Telegram)
The image collage above was made using four screenshots from the video shared previously. It shows the missile an instant before it hits the hospital (Source:Telegram)
When placed side by side with 3D models of both the Kh-101 and the AIM-120, the missile clearly shares more characteristics with the Kh-101, a cruise missile used exclusively by the Russian armed forces. Left and right, 3D models created by Bellingcat of a Kh-101 and an AIM-120, respectively. Centre, a screenshot from a video showing the missile that hit the hospital. Note that the features of the missile that hit the hospital closely match those of the Kh-101, but not at all those of the AIM-120 model (Source:Michael Sheldon/Telegram)
The AIM-120 has a sharper nose, different fins and is missing the jet engine on the back seen in the missile video. When overlayed on video, the Russian Kh-101 model matched the shape of the missile.

After the strike, the SBU released three images claiming to show remnants of the munition that hit the hospital. They stated that preliminary findings indicated it was a Kh-101, which appeared to tally with the aforementioned video footage. ssu.gov.ua/novyny/slidchi…
The images appear to be of a support spar and engine panel. The pictures below are of the remnants found from the hospital attack compared with images from the Ukrainian Territorial Defense Forces’ identification manual showing remnants of a Kh-101 strike.

On the left is a crop of the support spar in the Territorial Defense Forces’ identification manual. On the right is a crop of a remnant image (flipped horizontally for clarity) released by the SBU after the Kyiv hospital attack. The placement of holes on the SBU remnant (red and blue annotations) as well as the overall shape (yellow annotation) appear to match in both images (Source: Ukraine Territorial Defense Forces/Telegram)
We found the same remnants detailed in the SBU reports, in media images from the attack. We geolocated the images from UA news website Gazeta to just outside the hospital (50.450632, 30.481437), you can see the remnants below the investigators arm.

A side by side comparison of an image taken at the scene by Gazeta.UA (left) and an image posted by the SBU on Telegram (right). The same piece of equipment appears visible in both.
In another SBU image of a remnant of the missile that hit the hospital, you can see markings that include the numbers “840708036”, “~234452”, and “45 • 14” . Similar markings using this format are on a remnant from a Kh-101 allegedly shot down over Ukraine on December 29, 2023. The image on the left shows a remnant of the missile that hit the hospital as released by the SBU on Monday. The image on the right shows a remnant of a Kh-101 missile for sale on a website called AirHubStore (cropped and rotated for clarity). Note the similar markings (Source: Telegram/AirHubStore)
The analysis of open source evidence points to a Russian launched Kh-101 cruise missile being the weapon that struck the children’s hospital in Kyiv yesterday.
The same conclusion was found by Fabian Hoffman (@FRHoffmann1), a doctoral research fellow at the University of Oslo who specialises in missile technology
Dr. Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear weapons and missile expert at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey in California, similarly concluded in an email to Bellingcat that a Kh-101 missile could be seen in footage of the attack posted to social media sites.
The hospital attack was part of a wider Russian missile barrage that hit civilian targets elsewhere in Ukraine. In total, at least 41 people were killed as Russian missiles fell on several cities aside from Kyiv, including Kryvyi Rih and Dnipro. reuters.com/world/europe/u…
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the attack began at approximately 10:00 AM local time and involved at least 36 missiles, including 13 Kh-101 cruise missiles. This latest wave of Russian attacks against Ukraine is among the largest and deadliest in months.

In our latest documentary, Bellingcat and @scrippsnews used satellite imagery and open source videos and photos to identify dozens of cultural heritage and religious sites that have either been damaged or destroyed in Gaza. bellingcat.com/news/2024/06/2…
The Israel Defense Forces told us there “is no doctrine that aims to cause maximal damage to civilian infrastructure regardless of military necessity,” However some sites examined by @scrippsnews and Bellingcat appear to have been targeted, including cemeteries and mosques.
Famous sites, such as the Al-Omari Mosque in Gaza’s Old City, have been destroyed or greatly damaged, with the destruction visible from satellite imagery. More than half the 150 sites examined by @scrippsnews and Bellingcat would be considered religious sites. This image shows a screenshot from the documentary including a map that depicts all the identified cultural heritage sites, and a picture of the destruction at the Al Omari Mosque.

The military junta in Myanmar is losing control of large areas due to anti-coup resistance fighters and ethnic rebel groups. Bellingcat’s @pooja_Chaudhuri monitors the impact on civilians as the military reacts violently to its territorial losses. bellingcat.com/news/rest-of-w…
The military’s response to losing ground has been characterised by increased attacks against civilians. “Over the last five months, there has been a five-fold increase in [military] airstrikes against civilians,” the UN reported in March.
A coordinated offensive by opposition forces, ‘Operation 1027’, to take back junta strongholds has spread across the country since it began in October 2023. Bellingcat has geolocated several villages and townships affected by the military’s response.

Bellingcat’s @Pooja_Chaudhuri identified four Indian far-right media outlets that are receiving non-transparent foreign donations. Two sites could be linked to a US-based group associated with the RSS, the group that birthed far-right Hindu ideology. bellingcat.com/news/2024/05/2…
India’s current government has increased the scrutiny of NGOs, journalists and human rights groups. This has led to the suspension of their licences under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) which permits organisations to receive funds from abroad.
Thousands of non-profit organisations in India have lost access to foreign donors, forcing many to shut down. Meanwhile, some websites inhabiting the identity of news outlets and sharing hateful content appear to have been treated differently, allowing them to thrive.

A tugboat that has not been seen since an oil spill that caused damages totalling a reported $23 million in waters off Trinidad and Tobago has been detained by the Angolan Navy. New from @obtusatum and @GuardianTT … bellingcat.com/news/2024/05/2…
Earlier this year we investigated an unidentified oil tanker spilling oil across beaches, coral reefs and mangroves in Trinidad and Tobago. We identified the vessel as the barge “Gulfstream”. It'd been pulled by a tugboat named Solo Creed. bellingcat.com/news/2024/02/1…
We followed the Gulfstream’s journey through satellite imagery from Panama to Venezuela before it went dark in the days before it appeared on the Trinidad and Tobago coastline leaking oil. bellingcat.com/news/2024/02/2…

UN Special Rapporteurs have called on the Colombian Government to urgently investigate the fatal shooting of indigenous journalist Abelardo Liz, following an investigation by Bellingcat and @cerosetenta

@MaryLawlorhrds @Irenekhan @cvoulebellingcat.com/un-rapporteurs…
With @cerosetenta we investigated the killing of Abelardo Liz, an indigenous Colombian journalist who was shot on camera whilst covering clashes between protesters and the army, in a land demonstration in Corinto, Colombia in 2020. Here’s 5 things we uncovered about his death
We analysed 118 videos from that day, including the video Abelardo filmed himself. Using both video and audio analysis techniques we could plot the direction and area the bullet likely came from.
