● An Intellectual History of China: Knowledge, Thought, and Belief Before the Seventh Century CE Translation Edition b Zhaoguang Ge (Author)

● The Philosophy of the Mòzĭ: The First Consequentialists by Chris Fraser

● The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature by Kang-i Sun Chang (Editor) & Stephen Owen (Editor) ● The Mozi as an Evolving Text: Different Voices in Early Chinese Thought (Studies in the History of Chinese Texts, 4) by Carine Defoort (Editor) & Nicolas Standaert (Editor)

Mozi was born in almost the same year that Confucius passed away (around 480 BC), so he was like our furious youth - he stubbornly opposed anything Confucian. Especially when it came to power and social structure, he was basically singing a counter-melody to Confucius. In terms of power, the Confucians didn't discuss who the ruler should be, only how to govern; but Mozi advocated replacing the hereditary system of the Son of Heaven with a merit-based system (the world's first KPI, to be discussed later). On the flip side of social achievements, Confucius only talked about the etiquette norms within the class system, while the Mohists proposed overthrowing the class system and privileged class in order to establish a Great Harmony society. Personally, the greatest harvest in learning this history is not the question of who is right or wrong. The true value (for me) lies in the furious youth's resistance against the thoughts of a great unification under strong power - most of which carry positive significance.

Unfortunately, this kind of positive significance was never really realized in that society at the time, but it was as stubborn as a prairie fire in the spring wind - it's only now that modern people can appreciate the brilliance and comfort in its realization, even though no one truly understands it (good things don't need to be understood, just enjoyed; things that require painful learning or hardship are usually not fun).

With the passage of time, Mozi and his disciples, through their quiet persistence in being kind to the furious youth, and without ever sparking a nationwide movement to study Mozi, still realized one ideal after another across the centuries. Comparing it to modern constitutions, you'll see that the Mohists basically only left behind the book of Mozi and a few eulogists' fantasies, while the Confucians had Xunzi, Mencius and a huge number of follow-up research papers, supported by almost every dynasty.

So the victory or defeat is actually not important - just like the KPI Mozi proposed, uniting the various furious youths (other schools) to realize them one by one is the right way :) As usual, I've provided a book list in both Chinese and English (randomly selected) for everyone to criticize the rumors above.

Regarding the search for Chinese books, the difficulties are similar on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. I haven't carefully researched the Chinese book selections in Hong Kong or the US yet. Books are often treated like general consumer products - if the search doesn't yield the desired result, it's like not finding beef fried rice, so the sites quickly provide a bunch of beef chow mein or lamb fried rice instead. Sigh, the problem could be easily solved if the search is divided into two parts. Here, there should be many people who know the bookstore owners. Please let them contact me, and in a single day I can come up with multiple positive solutions. The first time would be free (saving the more serious preparation for the second time :) Also, this time the book list includes videos and online readings, which should be an optimized and diversified selection (following the trend). To reiterate, this is just a personal interest reading list, so the knowledge may not be very deep. If you don't like it, no need to read it. Thank you!
