We have to start connecting the dots. Here are 2 examples:
1. Climate Scientist @MichaelEMann, writing about how Doom is exploited by Russia to degrade climate change action
2. Historian @TimothyDSnyder, writing about how Doom has been exploited by Russia & fascists everywhere

I began to connect the dots earlier this year. I had been feeling doom since 10/7. Doom b/c of all the real, awful events. Then doom b/c of what felt like a shared reality & purpose becoming unraveled. Doom at what felt like an inability to influence anything. Loss of agency.
I began to think of known tactics that were used by both Russia and Trump in 2016. These tactics were to "Divide and Conquer." To pit allies against each other. To shred shared truth. To manipulate extant divisions. To depress the entire electorate. "Discourage or demobilize." Image
One morning, I randomly picked up Timothy Snyder's 2018 book "Road to Unfreedom." I read about the function of doom in authoritarian movements. The function of doom in Russia. The function of doom in Russian propaganda.
After reading "The Road to Unfreedom" & thinking about the doom all around me, the doom in my own mind, I asked myself, "Has this popped up elsewhere, not just in electoral politics?" I found my answer in @MichaelEMann's work on climate doomerism. Image
I cannot tell you, now, exactly what is going on. I do not know how much of this arises from our own minds or our own trauma, or how much of it arises from Russian interference, social media more broadly, etc. etc. etc. I can say other things w/ confidence, however.
-Russia wants Trump to win
-Russia uses Doom as a tactic, as do the Republicans
-Russia uses "Divide and Conquer" as a tactic, as do Republicans
-People are messaging me saying they've never felt so helpless
-The American election is tied right now, despite relentless negativity directed at just one side (Democrats). It's still tied.
-We are living in an era of vibes.
-We have it within our power to change the vibes from Doom to hope.
Non-partisans are not paying attention. Non-partisans are done w/ politics. COVID was just too much. People are not into this anymore. That's why they react so powerfully to "vibes." We need to change the vibes.
Here is something that is empirically true, not just an opinion: This election, as any American election would be, is numerically, scientifically, *winnable* by either political party. Here is something I strongly believe: We can & will win if we change the vibes.
We need to be united. We need to be strong. We need to be joyful. We need to have passion. We need to have confidence. This is how we win American elections. Trump is unpopular. Nobody even cares he just got shot at. Now is Go Time. Put everything else aside & act like a winner
Whether it's coming from Russia, from ourselves, or, as is most likely, an interaction, the Doom will be what defeats us. We are not so powerless as we believe. We can change the vibes so when non-partisans tune in, they see people they want to stand with. We decide our future.
Start treating Trump as someone who can be beaten. Start showing faith & confidence & joy in our own side. In the fight--this righteous fight--against American Fascism. Trump is *so* beatable. But only if we act like we believe we can beat him.
Don't engage in nit-picking. Or infighting. Block anyone--Russian Troll or otherwise--who is attempting to counter your hope w/ their doom. Engage in Uber Cringe. In Hope. In the joy of being a warrior for the Right Thing. Lift up your friends. Lift up Biden. Reject all Doom.
Our weaknesses are being exploited. This election is winnable for either party. However, the more we engage in infighting & despair, the more winnable it becomes for the authoritarians. If we change course, I Believe That We Will Win.

I have an observation. It will be a depressing one, but my intent is not to depress you; it is to diagnose an issue so that we can collectively treat it. I believe Democratic voters, at this moment in time, feel like they have just enough strength for one more big fight.
We lived through 4 years of Trump. We fought him at every turn. We defeated him. We lived through COVID. We've overcome that, as well. Then, we've lived through the Biden presidency & we've had to experience the fatigue of No One but Us seeing the good Biden has done.
Biden is one of the most legislatively successful presidents in American history. Not only that, but he has also been extraordinary on the world stage. He has ended wars. He has prevented wars. He has the faith of all of Europe in their fight against Putin.

Anyone who acts pompous about Biden vs. someone else at this stage is lying to you. There is no certainty here, other than the election can be won. There is no perfect way to turn the dial. To gain just enough voters such that you don't lose so many others. This is ridiculous.
I have no real knowledge of how Biden or Harris would do better in terms of the general election. All I have are arguments, tied together w/ data-analytic observations & personal reflections. That's all any of us have. I'm so tired of know-it-alls. People w/ humility know more.
Here is what I do know:
-This didn't have to happen. You could have just shaken off a bad debate. *We* made this happen.
-Now that we have a chance to move past it, some are choosing to drag it out
-We need to stop

A personal story: I would not have known that there were people in the U.S. who genuinely loved Hillary Clinton if I hadn't had Tuberculosis in 2016. I learned what "Hillary Love" was from my healthcare worker. Her love for Hillary made me see Hillary differently.
When you have TB, you are assigned a healthcare worker to deliver your medication every day. Often, you are put in quarantine & your healthcare worker is the only person you see. My healthcare worker, my beloved J, was with me every day from April 2016 to October, 2016.
My beloved "J" called me her other daughter. She was a Black 50-year-old woman from Tennessee. She was my warrior in the healthcare department. She was my warrior at home. She brought me pudding every morning with my meds, because she thought I was too small. She loved Hillary.

I have seen people panic these past few weeks that I'd never thought I'd see panic. Same with despair. Then, when I saw someone panic or despair who I would never have expected panic or despair, I started to panic & despair. Then you would too. We fed off of each other.
Even those of us who could see the vicious cycle felt compelled to return again and again and again. Each one of us was affected by someone we know & respect showing panic & despair. I've never been in the middle of a psycho-social whirlwind like that one.
I have insomnia. Last night was particularly terrible. I lay awake for hours, thinking of our shared afflictions & how to possibly confront them. I wondered, as I often do, if I am projecting my own traumatized mind upon the world, or if I am, in fact, correct in seeing trauma all around me

Hi, folks, I have some good news. It's based somewhat in anecdote, but I am confident in my anecdotal experience reflecting reality. The Biden campaign & others want the focus to turn to Project2025. The good news is: It's working. This is from the past week: Image
Social media is not reality, but what we talk about in social media is what drives narratives. There is much to learn about the fact that Israel/Gaza consumed all of our energy for 9 months & now is a "non-story." We stopped talking about it when we panicked about the debate.
The media only seems to talk about Democrats' problems. Part of that is that the media is biased & is desperately seeking false equivalency in the face of fascism. Part of it is that all of our social media energy is poured into debating w/ each other. That drives the narrative.

I feel like people aren't getting this &, personally, I think it's the most critical calculation about "winning" that we need to be having. Let's put aside our emotions for a minute; our loyalties, etc. Let's consider what we "know" vs. what we "don't know."🧵
We know what Biden's floor is. We know what it is after many years of elections & his presidency. Critically, we know what the floor looks like after a bad debate performance & an onslaught of negative media. Biden is at his weakest moment right now. He is still tied w/ Trump.
If polls had shifted significantly & had continued to shift post-debate, we'd be in different territory. But that's not what we're seeing. Rather, we are seeing that the most biased, relentlessly negative media coverage can be thrown at the man & is still tied w/ Trump.
