I think there’s a sense the next 100 days could shut the door on Trump’s political future. That’s where some of this energy is coming from IMO.

We’ve worked & struggled for 8 yrs to protect America from him. And on the national level, the worst MAY be behind us if we win. 1/🧵
To be sure, if Harris wins, Trump could run again, but would that really be a serious challenge? Nah, not given his age IMO. In other words, the next 100 days could be the last time we have to REALLY worry about Trump being president.

This is exciting. But it’s also scary... 2/
Just take a look at the different futures before us. One is democratic, hopeful, and prosperous. The other is authoritarian, backward, and cruel.

One reflects the better angels of our nature. The other reflects our worst…3/
In one future, America is a beacon of freedom to the world. In the other, America aligns itself with the world’s autocracies.

There is so much at stake. We are at a pivot point in history. So it really is 100 days for the next ten years. It’s 100 days for the next generation. 4/
A couple things: I don’t think Trump’s going away if he loses. And even after Trump goes away, his movement will remain. 2016 opened up a Pandora’s box of extremism that may last a generation. This is particularly the case on the state level. 5/
I also think there will be some national figure to assume the MAGA mantle after Trump goes away.

But I do think that if we beat Trump for a SECOND time, that will take a lot of the power from this movement. And it’s POSSIBLE the fever could break. 6/
This is a long way of saying, this is an exciting time. But it is also a consequential time. So much is at stake.

It’s OK to be happy and joyful. In fact, that’s important to being able to win. But never forget what happens if we lose. Run through the finish line. 7/7 END

These last couple weeks have been extraordinary. I’ve gone from envisioning the worst possible futures for my country to believing in the best possible ones.

I’ve gone from feeling dread to feeling the kind of hope I felt in 2008. I feel relieved. But it’s more than that... 1/🧵
It’s as if Joe Biden passing the torch to Kamala Harris in the way he did opened up a door into a different dimension, to a different version of our country, one that we had forgotten existed or doubted still did. 2/
We still have a lot of work to do, even if we beat Trump. But we’ve gone from just trying to hang on to our country, to imagining a future for America with limitless opportunity, where anything is possible. 3/

I remember Jan 6th, not only as one of the darkest days in our history, but as the day a Black American & Jewish American won Senate seats in Georgia. Then as now, America is at a crossroads, where we can choose a future that reflects either the best or worst of our country. 1/🧵
Indeed, we have to come to grips that our future could go in radically different directions. It’s just a reality.

But days like today fill me with immense gratitude to be American, as well as the hope and BELIEF that our future will reflect the better angels of our nature. 2/
How could what Biden did today not give you hope? How could his selfless act not make you BELIEVE we can overcome the threat before us?

Biden didn’t just do the right thing. He showed us that the future where America achieves its promise isn’t a fiction. It can be our reality.3/

Nothing makes me more upset than a particular type of “elite”who isn’t going to vote in this election.

You could have been born in China or Russia or a hundred other places. But you were born here or immigrated. THAT is why you have the opportunity to prosper and flourish. 1/🧵
You aren’t an island onto yourself. You didn’t do this all on your own. Your success is made possible by the Rule of Law. By the Peaceful Transition of Power. By America’s economy and spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. 2/
Not voting, claiming both sides are the same, pretending like you’re somehow above the partisan fray, or even thinking Trump could be good for you is such a profoundly selfish and anti-social outlook.

How can you purport to be for progress and not care about democracy? 3/

I want to reiterate something. Trump isn’t Darth Vader. He doesn’t have magical powers. He’s dangerous. But he’s a clown…Stop ascribing so much inevitability to him.

This doesn’t mean he and his movement are not incredibly dangerous. But nothing about this pre-destined…1/🧵
There’s a reason anti-democratic movements use massive flags, create cults of personality, and speak as if they’re invincible.

It’s smoke & mirrors. It’s compensating for lack of democratic legitimacy and personal insecurity through fear and the deification of their leaders. 2/
We look back at the most evil movements in history and think it was inevitable that they did what they did. Nonsense. They succeeded because they were underestimated.

Don’t underestimate what we’re up against. But MAGA isn’t the Evil Empire with the power of the Force…3/

When Thomas Paine wrote, “These are the times that try men’s souls,” I think he meant the times were so trying because the stakes were extremely high and it was entirely unclear if the colonists could defeat the British.

The situation is similar in America today…1/
The stakes are very high—although not nearly as high as for the founders—and we have to live with the possibility Trump wins. We can’t panic. We have to act & act stategically.

This is why the times try our souls. Because we have to remain measured in the face of the abyss. 2/
We have to remain committed no matter what happens. We have to live with the understanding of the extreme consequences of failure while not having those consequences paralyze us. We have to be equal parts inspired and resilient. 3/

In the spirit of ACTING rather than ruminating, how about the idea of “Freedom Rallies” in swing states.

They’d be headlined by Biden or Obama, as well as by key nonpartisan or bi-partisan surrogates, and celebrate America. This wouldn’t just be about democracy … 1/
… these rallies would be about celebrating our culture, our diversity, our beautiful country, our food, as well as our Constitution. These would be joyful, patriotic occasions.

Sure, they could talk about Donald Trump, but the message here would be positive. 2/
An implicit message would be that Trump isn’t just a threat to our democracy. He’s a threat to everything that makes us great. By dividing us, he is not just threatening our democratic exceptionalism, he’s threatening our cultural exceptionalism too, the fabric of our nation. 3/
