How did we get here? What are the key features of the Maduro regime? How best to make sense of the opposition's strategy? These and other questions can be approached with the help of recent works published on Venezuela under Maduro. Here are five great monographs and collections:
1) @jcorrales2011 ' 'Autocracy Rising: How Venezuela Transitioned to Authoritarianism' (Brookings, 2022), offers a great overview of how Maduro's regime became an autocracy during the last decade. A thought-provoking and important book:
2) @l_gamboag 's essential 'Resisting Backsliding: Opposition Strategies against the Erosion of Democracy', is a crucial read to make sense of the Venezuelan opposition's strategy against Maduro's autocratic rule, in comparative and historical perspective
3) An edited collection expertly curated and edited by @BenedicteBull and @RosalesAntulio at the European Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (ERLACS) looks at political/economic aspects of the country's crisis and authoritarian trajectory:
4) Violence, repression, impunity: Key in Venezuela under Maduro. Two great works: 'The Paradox of Violence in Venezuela' ed by @dsmilde, Veronica Zubillaga and @BeccaAnnice, and "Rapports ordinaires à la violence d'État au Venezuela" ed. by @YolettyBracho and Fabrice Andréani
5) A recent special issue at @CRIESLAC Pensamiento Propio, edited by our dear colleagues @infocracia and @Maripuerta, looking at other aspects of the deepening of authoritarianism under Maduro, including the party system, disinformation and polarization:
These are only a few examples. I am missing many great works, including a variety of rigorous journal articles, chapters, reports, and others by dedicated, ethical and truly impressive scholars - including many Venezuelans. Reach out to Venezuelanists if you have any questions!
