Twenty days ago, Joe Biden dropped out of the Presidential race -- and Donald Trump has yet to find a campaign to run against Kamala Harris.
To no one’s surprise, Trump is an undisciplined candidate. His weakness has also been his strength: We have not seen a political showman of his caliber before.
Until three weeks ago, however, the former President had run a surprisingly disciplined 2024 campaign, constrained by legal threats to his freedom and fortune, gag orders, and the professionalism of his campaign team.
All that has gone out the window as Kamala Harris has rocketed to stardom and Trump’s campaign has fallen in the polls.
Now, Trump is campaigning like a cornered animal. Late-night tweets, boiling with rage, are back. He attacks the Republican Governor of Georgia and his wife. He signaled desperation instead of confidence in another hold-your-breath, “He said what?” news conference.
There is no concentration of firepower in Trump World. His only weapon seems to be a kitchen sink; Trump is throwing ten campaigns at Harris, not one.
First, the Trump campaign brands Harris as the hand-picked candidate of an anti-democratic process. Next, they paint her as a political version of Jerzy Kosinski’s clueless Chauncey Gardiner, an inept soul who lacks the mental capacity the Presidency requires. Then, the opposite charge: The cunning Harris skillfully covered up Biden’s mental decline. A moment later, she is dangerously liberal Kamala. No, the story is she’s a failure: As Biden’s partner, she is equally responsible for the flaws of the Administration. By the way, she is not black and only draws crowds with free pizza.
That’s a lot of spaghetti to throw against the wall.
My experience: One bad campaign is more effective than ten good ones. As the Democratic convention begins, Trump doesn’t have time for ten campaigns, just one.
Let’s examine “the root cause” of the problem.
Trump had control of the narrative in this campaign until Joe Biden’s candidacy expired. Against Biden, Trump represented change. Make America Great Again offered renewal. Trump’s message had clarity: He was the disruptive hand grenade Americans rolled under the old, self-serving Washington establishment’s door.
Then, in an unfortunate prisoner exchange, Joe Biden lost his job -- and the Trump campaign lost its focus. Though the election has changed, and Trump’s old adversary has left the building, Trump is still running against Joe Biden. He is not running against the new candidate in front of him.
Harris has many debilities, but she is not Joe Biden. She is not perceived as part of the old, self-serving Washington establishment whose opposition breathes life into Trump.
Harris does not look like the past: She offers the promise and possibility of a new generation. She does not look like the Washington establishment: She’s the first black and the first woman to gain the presidential nomination of either party.
More importantly, Harris killed the King. She slayed the reigning figurehead of the tired, old Washington establishment. Regicide, along with race, youth, and gender, now make her a political outsider – an equal, in that aspect, to her opponent.
Trump could claim Biden was exactly what he appeared to be: a dangerously weak, liberal failure. To stop Harris, the Trump campaign must explain the opposite: Harris is not what she appears to be at all.
Fortunately for Team Trump, that’s not a tough campaign to run. Any Republican consultant who has been around the track can run that campaign blindfolded. It always follows this pattern…
Your opponent is a denizen of the left, so you disqualify them, day one, on the issues. Simply put, you paint your adversary as a liberal. Your opponent, of course, reacts as if a beam of light hit a vampire. They “evolve” or flip-flop to get to the center. Then, you’ve got them: They tumble into The Faustian Trap, having sold their soul for political profit. You hit their trustworthiness, authenticity, and character. Damned if they are lefties. Damned more when they claim they aren’t. In the end, your opponent is disqualified, not only as a leftist but as a figure no one respects: a politician.
And it is devastating because it is true. Our nation is being ruined by the progressive appetite for power at any cost.
In such a campaign, Trump reassumes his greatest role: the anti-politician fighting for Everyman against #YesterdaysFakePoliticians. This campaign puts Trump back in control of the election narrative.
The best campaign Trump can run against Harris-Walz has the fundamental structure of a horror movie: These two radicals claim they are like you? It’s a trick! The call is coming from inside the house! Watch out for the axe! Whack!
The contrast between what Kamala Harris is trying to become 90 days before an election and her beliefs three short weeks ago is emotional dynamite, providing tremendous dramatic power. Trump has time to turn this election around.
But Trump must stop running against Joe Biden and run against the fake, new Kamala Harris. So, start now. Do not let the Democrats have an open field at the Democratic convention. Block Harris’s path to the future. Every day you wait, the cement sets and becomes harder.
Begin by turning the Democratic Convention into a treasure hunt.
Make it a search to find the real Kamala. Explain that you’re looking for the Kamala we’ve long known: a politician with San Francisco values, a woman of extreme and radical commitments.
Explain you’re looking for the Kamala whose radical beliefs and support of Bidenomics, captured forever on Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram, have made our streets unsafe, our rent too expensive, and our groceries too costly. Make it clear you’re looking for eliminate-ICE Kamala, defund-the-police Kamala, and bail-out-violent-arsonists Kamala, whose weakness on crime has turned going for a jog into running for your life.
Her liberalism may look joyful, but it’s nothing to laugh about. Her support of Biden’s bumbling weakness has broken our border, unsheathed predator nations, and exposed the world to war with Russia, China, and radical Islam.
That’s the real Kamala. And 90 days before an election, she is trying to disappear -- all so the Democratic Convention can create a mirage.
And when Harris claims her opportune transformation is sincere, point out her revealing mistake:
Sham Kamala just picked the most extreme liberal candidate for Vice-President in political history. Tampons for boys, permission slips for riots and violence, free health care for illegal aliens, and secret gender transitions for children, hidden from parents. The mask slipped and Kamala revealed her soul.
My advice to the Trump campaign: Break Kamala’s new brand. Make it too hot to hold.
When she says, “We’re not going back,” agree. Explain she’s right: The real Kamala is not going back to cheaper groceries, lower inflation, fewer wars, less crime, and a secure border. That’s why her campaign and convention are fabricating this deception.
My recommendation: Brand the Democratic Convention. Counter-program it with an opposing theme. Explain that “This Democratic Convention is a gigantic effort to fake you and every American voter by creating a fake Kamala Harris.
“Are you going to let Kamala fake you?” That might not be a bad bumper sticker.
