NEW: Kamala Harrisโ presidential campaign is misrepresenting news articles in Google search, making them appear like endorsements, AllSides has found.
Thread ๐งต
The Harris ads masquerade as news articles w/ a clear pro-Harris slant. The Harris campaign has changed the actual headlines and preview text to make it appear the news outlet is explicitly supporting her candidacy.
Hereโs an example from @guardian.
When clicked, the ad links to a normal news article โ not an explicit endorsement.
Hereโs another example from @AP, which AllSides rates Lean Left
The Harris campaign spent over $750k on Google ads in August, Google Ads data shows. Many targeted swing states, such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
We also tried to find examples of the Trump campaign using similar tactics, but found nothing.
An AllSides editor in Pennsylvania was signed into her company Google account when she discovered the ads. Her search results were likely personalized based on her account data and are difficult to replicate.
Beguiling voters with fake endorsements from major news sources seems to be a new political campaign tactic. Keep an eye out for the โSponsoredโ label on Google search results to avoid being misled.
Donald Trump held a rally at Madison Square Garden last night, joined by several high-profile speakers.
Many left media framed it negatively, highlighting โracistโ tropes or that in 1939 MSG housed a pro-Nazi rally. Right media described it as โhistoricโ or โpacked.โ
Recap๐งต
Speakers notably included @JDVance, @ElonMusk, @RobertKennedyJr, @TulsiGabbard, @TuckerCarlson, @VivekGRamaswamy, @HulkHogan, @DrPhil, and many more.
@JDVance @elonmusk @RobertKennedyJr @TulsiGabbard @TuckerCarlson @VivekGRamaswamy @HulkHogan @DrPhil @VigilantFox MSG's 19,500 seats sold out shortly after it was announced earlier this month. Donald Trump Jr. claimed 200,000 tried to attend the rally.
Posts spread virally on X that NYPD reported 75,000 people in the streets outside the rally, though AllSides was unable to verify this.
The FBI revised its 2022 crime data to show that violent crime rose by 4.5% in 2022. The figure stands in contrast to the โfinalโ figure the FBI reported in September 2023, which showed it fell by 2.1%.
AllSides did not find coverage from the left. Thread ๐งต
The change was reported by @RCPolitics (Center), which said it โdiscovered the change through a cryptic reference on the FBI website that states: โThe 2022 violent crime rate has been updated for inclusion in CIUS, 2023.โโ
@RCPolitics In the linked report, there is no mention that the numbers increased. RealClear reported that the only way to see the change is โby downloading the FBIโs new crime data and comparing it to the file released last year.โ
Back then, we found a 65% left bias. The number has remained relatively steady.
Here's the full timeline of Google's News' bias ๐งต
In 2018, then-President Donald Trump accused Google of bias after PJ Media (Right bias) published findings that 96% of results for the keyword "๐๐ณ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฑ" were from left-leaning outlets.
An AllSides analysis that year found
In 2019, Northwestern University researchers found ๐ท๐๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐บ๐ผ๐๐๐น๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐ณ๐ ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป ๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐ณ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ถ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ in Google Newsโ Top Stories section.
Google News shows strong left-leaning political bias, a new AllSides analysis found.
61% of media outlets presented on @googlenewsโ homepage over a 5-day period were from sources AllSides rates on the left, with just 3% on the right.
Letโs dive deeper๐๐ผ๐งต
Searching โelectionโ returned Google News results only from left-wing media outlets in the days leading up to the 2022 midterms.
For every search term tested, Google News results from outlets on the left outnumbered outlets on the right and in the center.
Google Newsโ homepage heavily favored @CNN (Left bias) overall, showing stories from this media outlet the most often (15% of total stories were from this outlet).
