People in general have very short memories. They forget that the same Hamas tactics are repeated after every conflict with Israel. People tend to see the current conflict and react to that. What Hamas is doing now is exactly the same as what it did during the Israel/Gaza war in 2014 and every other outbreak of conflict before and since. I’ve a good memory and because I’m 65 I can remember from real time and believe me, Hamas tactics are always the same. Here’s how it plays out….
Hamas launches attacks against Israel and Israelis. They know Israel will respond so Hamas immediately uses human shields to protect its weapons and launch sites and its fighters. After every attack they move weapons and fighters into hospitals, schools and Mosques. Their leaders stay in tunnels. They know Israel will respond and Hamas hopes some of the human shields they hide behind will be killed. They immediately inflate the numbers of dead and injured and will then call on the world to condemn Israel. And every single time it works. Governments and media outlets immediately call for a ceasefire, which would allow Hamas to do as they always do…regroup and rearm. And Israel is immediately blamed when the ceasefire doesn’t immediately happen. So for however long the conflict lasts Israel is seen as being at fault when initial international calls for a ceasefire didn’t achieve the aims. And just like a washing cycle of wash, rinse and repeat, it happens all over again the next time Hamas attacks Israel.
Now this Hamas strategy always works. They know decent people around the world will be sickened by images of dead children and other civilians. So the knee jerk reaction to seeing those images is to blame whoever fired the weapons that, in Israel’s case, inadvertently killed those people, instead of blaming Hamas, who deliberately placed those Palestinian civilians in Harms way in the hope and the full knowledge that many will be killed and injured.
Hamas does everything in its power to force as many Palestinians (and Israelis) to be killed or injured. They fire their missiles from densely populated areas and doesn’t provide any protection for any of the civilians living there. For all the billions of dollars in aid money they get Hamas have not provided any bomb shelters for its citizens. They did however build a vast amount of underground tunnels to protect themselves and their leaders and won’t even allow their citizens to shelter there.
The thing is, Israel’s aims are legitimate. It is fighting a war of self defence, trying to protect its citizens from rocket and other attacks. Hamas’ aims are not. Its rocket attacks against Israel and all its incursions into Israel are not legitimate. Hamas’ campaign is nothing more than Jew hatred. That’s all it is and this hatred of Jews is what motivates Hamas. Hamas does not exist to bring about peace or a two state solution. It came about to prevent any resolution to the conflict that will see Israel still existing. And yet government leaders around the world reward Hamas terrorism by condemning Israel and calling for a ceasefire that will only enable Hamas to regroup and rearm and repeat more attacks against Israel in the future. It’s how it happened in all previous wars between Israel and Hamas.
World leaders should realise that Hamas is not interested in peace or a two state solution. There’s even proof. One example is Gaza itself. Just look at how Hamas reacted to Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza in 2005. Not one Jew or one Israeli soldier remand. And what did Hamas do? It doubled down on their attacks against Israel, culminating in Oct 7 2023.
World leaders really need to change their outdated and so often repeated reactions and demands they make every time Israel responds to Hamas attacks. They should realise and accept that the time has come to end Hamas’ barbarism. . The only calls for a ceasefire should be conditional on the release of all the hostages and the dismantling of Hamas
