In less than 72 hours, the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI), the majority of whose members are from parties that are part of the Koalisi Indonesia Maju+ (KIM+), A coalition led by President-Elect @prabowo, which fully supports President @jokowi government, is making a controversial move to advance Joko Widodo's political dynasty and the interests of the oligarchy within the coalition.
The DPR RI is drafting a Regional Election Bill (RUU Pilkada) that facilitates the president’s son running for office and overturns the Constitutional Court’s decision on lowering the regional election threshold. This move could enhance the political influence of the Koalisi Indonesia Maju+, increasing their chances of winning in various regions across Indonesia.
This is a form of autocratic legalism that President Jokowi's administration has continuously displayed through regulations that benefit the oligarch.
This autocratic legalism has previously been judged in a people's tribunal that evaluated the 10 years of President Jokowi's administration. ylbhi.or.id/informasi/indo…
Last year, to facilitate the candidacy of President Jokowi’s son, Gibran, a significant change was made to the age requirements for presidential and vice-presidential candidates. Initially, the regulation stipulated that the minimum age for presidential and vice-presidential candidates was 40 years.
However, the ruling, led by Anwar Usman—Gibran’s uncle and Jokowi’s brother-in-law—resulted in an adjustment allowing individuals under 40 to run for office, for as long as they have previously led a region. This change enabled Gibran, who was 36 years old and serving as the Mayor of Solo at the time, to qualify as a candidate. Gibran is now the elected Vice President of Indonesia.
Recently, banners announcing "Kaesang 2024-2029 DKI Jakarta" have been circulating. @kaesangp, currently 29 years old and born on December 5, 1994, is the youngest son of Joko Widodo. This political maneuver demonstrates a concerted effort to advance the Jokowi political dynasty by promoting Kaesang as a candidate for regional leadership in a strategic region such as Jakarta.
This maneuver further underscores how election momentum often becomes a battleground for political elites, their cronies, and the oligarchy to conspire and control natural resource potential, particularly in the mining sector. This also shows that President Jokowi's family, as well as those affiliated with the Koalisi Indonesia Maju+ coalition (including many individuals who are entrepreneurs and stakeholders in the extractive industries), and their oligarch friends, are significant players in the mining industry:
A 2018 report by @bersihkanindonesia revealed that the mining sector is a major source of campaign funding at both national and regional levels due to the lack of government subsidies for political parties. Consequently, political costs are often covered by activities in sectors such as coal mining: auriga.or.id/flipbooks/repo…
The substantial investments in the mining sector and the government's involvement in nearly all stages of the process through various regulations create opportunities and incentives for corruption and exploitation by corporate elites. These practices expose vulnerabilities to corruption, with the highest risks arising from weaknesses in the permit issuance process (54%) and practices within that process (20%).
We, along with millions of others behind that blue image, condemn the violations of democratic values and the constitution through the autocratic legalism currently exhibited by the Jokowi regime.
We are trying to summarize several key events that have made this maneuver possible. Here is what happened:
Tomorrow, thousands of us in Jakarta will take to the streets to protest in front of the House of Representatives building and the Presidential Palace. If you're in the area, join us—we'll see you there!
