But then Husted started pushing policies his donors wanted, even though they were disastrous for Ohio families, students and taxpayers.
One of those get-rich schemes were for-profit charter schools
A legislative agency that provided some oversight of these new “schools”…
2/
…warned Ohio politicians that they posed a huge risk.
And as Ohio Speaker of the House at the time, Husted reacted the only way that a politician owned by special interests knew to react….he got rid of that agency, and not the risky schools.
3/
That decision…to eliminate that oversight…was THE critical step that opened the floodgates of years of profit-making by shitty, scammy schools.
The most scammy of all those schools was called ECOT. An “online” for-profit school that turned out to be a complete…
4/
…. scam, growing to the size of a university, collecting thousands for every student who logged on and left a public school to do so, who of course saw their education scores tank.
But ECOT also soon emerged as the Ohio GOP’s largest donor. And Husted got a lot of those $
5/
Later, it turned out that ECOT also wasn’t really taking attendance, so they were bilking tax dollars for millions…for phantom students.
The state still has not gotten all those dollars back.
Add it up, and this is arguably the second largest scandal in Ohio history…
6/
…only behind the First Energy scandal (also a Husted creation).
But in this case, not only did it cost hundreds of millions. It undermined public schools & destroyed the education of 1000s of kids.
Ohio’s 5th place ranking in public education has plummeted to the mid-20s
7/
Now, you probably think I must be exaggerating when I say that Husted’s role was so pivotal in this scandal.
Well, if you don’t believe me, I have another source for that claim.
Someone who would know better than anybody.
ECOT itself.
You see, when ECOT handed out its first “honorary degree,” they gave it to none other than Husted.
Here’s the photo of that proud moment for Jon:
8/
And when they did, here’s what they said: “Without Speaker Husted…the [ECOT] revolution in e-learning in Ohio may have ended.”
And there he is waving to those words.
Folks, given the size of the scandal, that sentence alone should be disqualifying to his ever serving
9/
…in office again.
But Ohio is so awash in corruption, Husted just keeps moving on up.
That is, until now.
Make sure people know.
And Jon, we’re all eagerly looking forward to policy “truth” number 4. 👀
Will be happy to respond.

Not long ago, Ohio had the 5th highest system of public education in the nation.
Then big donors and Republican politicians got involved, largely drawn by the big money they sought to grab from public…
1/
…education funds. (A large part of the state budget and local tax revenues).
And what they did was take the system of public education that was performing so well, and suck as much money out of it as they could—converting it to profits and political donations.
2/
The first major wave in Ohio involved for-profit charter schools.
These for-profit schools followed a consistent pattern: major political contributions to the GOP and largely poor outcomes for students.
BUT they are audited. That’s one reason one of these schools..
3/
An Atty General is supposed to represent the people
Takes an an oath to adhere to the OH Constitution
That Constitution is now clear: gov’t should not “burden, directly or indirectly,” or “interfere” w, the right of Ohioans to make their own “reproductive decisions”…
Yost’s own legal opinion in 2023 explained that that the new right in Ohio was “stricter” than Roe.
And he anticipated a court finding that, under the new Issue 1 language, the 24-hour period posed an unconstitutional burden.
And that would mean the law would NOT be…
2/
“likely to survive.” His office’s words.
So why the F is he expending taxpayer dollars defending laws that violate both the will of the people and the Constitution, AND his own office’s interpretation of the Constitution about a year ago.
Reminder: candidates who are down the ballot are of course the potential bench for the future. And when they run, they lift turnout for everyone on the ballot.
BUT the #1 reason to focus on these candidates is because these are the offices (statehouse and…
1/
…others) that are on the FRONT LINE of the battle of democracy and freedom.
And the far right has prioritized them because that is where they do most of their damage to democracy and freedom. (Dobbs is just one example).
2/
So contesting these seats fiercely is the way we win the long-term battle for democracy. By stopping the attack. And by protecting democracy and freedom.
When we ignore these seats, we give the far right an unending opportunity to advance their far-right agenda w no…
3/
One of their slickest, and sickest, tactics in attacking democracy.
When the Ohio GOP is losing, or fears a loss, their officials actually twist and manipulate the very ballot…
1/
order will deliver victory for them from the jaws of defeat.
And in some cases, they are actually trying to trick the voters into voting the opposite way from their desired intent—which is about as sick as it gets.
And they’re at it again….today in fact.
2/
Example 1:
After losing three of four Ohio Supreme Court races in two years (even in a year where Trump won by 8), the Ohio’s GOP solution: add party labels to the ballot and move those races much higher on the ballot so that they appear as partisan as all the others.
3/
As I watch Trump once again insult injured veterans, and those who sacrificed everything, I want to share a story that shakes me to my core every time I think of it.
It’s about a family friend
At 19 or so, he went to Vietnam.
Army.
Never talks about it. But it’s…
1/
…clear he saw and experienced horrific, traumatizing things while there.
He came home, worked hard, and raised a family. He’s now retired.
He never even sought help from the VA because he felt that that was for veterans who’d endured injuries and challenges he hadn’t.
2/
But recently, his family convinced him to access the VA, so he finally did.
During a health screening, they found that a skin growth was cancerous, and scheduled surgery to remove it.
It was successful
But the real story is what happened when he awoke from anesthesia.
3/
And as we enter the new school year, and the end of the first full year of universal vouchers in Ohio, the numbers continue to explode (as they are in other states).
1/
As @clevelanddotcom wrote Tuesday, the total cost of private school vouchers for the last school year (through August 7) ended up being….
And no surprise, the big jump in spending came from the newest voucher “program”—the one that eliminated all restrictions on who’s eligible to receive those vouchers:
“Enrollment in EdChoice-Expansion ballooned last school year…”
