I watched @NetflixIndia #IC814TheKandaharHijack last week & had so many messages from friends for my views as an Aviation Consultant & veteran - including @IAsTerrorTrail (who was part of the crew) thus I have penned my thoughts here, after reading multiple real accounts, watching the movie & speaking to some of those involved.
As a victim of aviation terrorism myself, I treat these threats & claims very seriously. I understand the pain that many of the families may have gone through watching a rehashed account of their tragedy.

IMHO This series is a work of TOTAL FICTION- and DOES NOT MIRROR what happened. ( I request you to rewatch the series once you have read this long thread)
Please also NOTE & Pay attention to the Producers DISCLAIMER - which Should have been LARGER & SHOWN ON SCREEN FOR LONGER. (see pic)
My major grouse is that when a fictional movie that has real life footage featuring the then Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, or NSA - then a sufficent disclaimer must be put in, on the live footage scenes itself. It MUST BE LABELLED FICTION.
The negotiators of IC815 include today India's NSA Mr.Ajit Doval & other officers who still serve India with pride.
Lots of observations -but before I go further, As a proud INDIAN, I CONDEMN the depiction of Pakistani ISI & the Taliban as GOODY GOODIES, they WERE & ARE SCUM.
It is shocking that any Indian producer/ director, would accept this (regardless of their political affiliations). Let us never forget the 1000s of Indian lives lost in terrorist acts plotted by ISI, JeM, LeT, HuM, Taliban, Khalistanis & other terrorists. Pulwama,26-11, Kanishka, Balakot, Malegaon, Parliament etc ... I could go on & on. @anubhavsinha
Mistakes may have been made, by some in govt at ATQ- but there was a major Pak ISI -Nepali- Taliban conspiracy at KTM. I STRONGLY CONDEMN the impression deliberately created, that our then PM or GOI bungled it. Lest we forget, this was the same PM who achieved Pokharan-2 in that year, & also ordered the retaking of Akshardham & won the war in Kargil. IMHO He was our best PM
It is very clear that attempts have been made to show Shri A.B.Vajpayee ji, NDA & BJP in a poor light !
This is HIGHLY DEPLORABLE, I CONDEMN it completely.
I also remember the 1990s case of Rubeena Saeed & Mufti Mohammed Sayeed all too well, where terrorists were released for the Ministers daughter.
1. IC-814 has a stellar cast, with a big budget production, but made with a fictional bollywood mindset. The Actors have acted out a script beautifully - on a lavish production, but it is NOT the true & complete story behind the Hijack.
2. There is a disclaimer that it is a thematic representation based on "true events" however it is pure fiction, with so many glaring errors, which I noticed as someone in #aviation for the last 38 years & having flown on the A-300 many years.
3. During the analysis of this Net Series, I watched the series twice over, and I read other books on the Hijack, namely the book by the flight engineer- "IC814 Hijacked" which is a highly technical & detailed account of the events & IAS Terror trail, besides watching the entire National Geographic documentary- which is now on my youtube. (tagged below in thread)
4. I wish that @NetflixIndia & the director had appointed a reliable Aviation consultant for the series, to correct many technical & factual errors that are shown in the series. In my view it has lowered the reputation of the producers & Netflix.
5. (a) The film is a pro-ISI, Pro-Taliban presentation, and its very jarring. Perhaps the makers suffered Stockholm Syndrome, or just had a deep Anti National bias.
(b) The Aircraft an A-300 B2, VT-EDW was one of the earliest ever made by Airbus, and had MSIN no 36, indicating it was the 36th aircraft of that series made by Airbus. Even in 1999, It was ancient.
(c) The Flight had a crew of 2 pilots, 1 Flight Engineer, and 8 Cabin Crew which included two male crew - Mr.Anil Sharma, Mr. M.Sateesh. There were 6 ladies -Ms.Rajani, Ms.Sabita, Ms.Kabita, Ms.Debnath, Ms.Sapna & Ms.Kalpana who operated the flight, yet only 3 Cabin Crew are shown.
(d) Incidentally, through Flight Engineer Jaggias book I learnt that 7 of the 8 crew on board IC-814 had just done the IC-939 HYD-DEL together, and were well known to each other. The 8th Crew Anil Sharma joined them in Delhi, it was a change of Aircraft, and a delay ex-Delhi.
(e) This flight was a Quick return flight for the crew, hence the entire set of crew was on board, during the transit at Tribhuvan International airport. For any flyer, it then becomes pretty clear, that no ground staff, can bring anything on board & place it in the hatracks as depicted, as all the Crew are on board & vigilant.
(f) The uniforms of the male crew- are NOT Indian Airlines, but are those of Air India (circa 1990) the difference was in the Epaulettes & wings. Even the Pilots uniform has flaws. The Stripes design & epaulettes are incorrect.
(g) Through the entire series, we are shown 1 male & 2 female crew only. Then all of a sudden, in one scene in the later episodes, we are suddenly shown 3 females and 5 male crew (all wearing Air India uniforms) who then dissappear from the series.
(h) Indian Airlines did not serve water in 200ml pet bottles in 1999, in fact neither did Air India (other than from foreign stations). They were launched in India, that year and only brought on board in the 2000s. (in the early aircraft scenes, the crew are shown distributing 200 ml pet bottles). IAC used to give water in plastic beakers until 2000/01
(i) The logo "IATA" is misspelt in every scene on the Aircraft VT-EDW as "AIATA"
(j) It is unheard of that any Catering officer, much less any officer, could come on board a security cleared Aircraft being readied for departure and load a handbag full of guns in the overhead bin, ready for departure as depicted in the movie. that is pure speculation & filmy imagination.
(k) In the aftermath of the Kanishka bombing, in 1985, there were many security norms that came about. One of them was about baggage checks & screening and the other was about SSLC checks - Secondary Security Ladder checks. The DGCA had issued two CARs on this subject, the last one being in 1999 October. ( just 2 months before this incident) Those DGCA CAR are still VALID.
Hence a lot of the security aspects at KTM seem to be fictional. It must be remembered that for the crew this was QR flight, they were on board, and it is implausible that a lot of the stuff shown could have happened as described.
(l) "Commando mein bowser hain" - was the dialogue, which made me laugh. Obviously mis-spoke, but it shows the kind of slip shod work, they did on such a mega budget movie.
(m) It was a practice then, and continues even today, that IAC & AI crew Open ALL THE OVERHEAD BINS for fresh passengers to load bags. Any other bag would have been noticed by the crew. It is also unlikely that the senior most male crew, meets & greets Passengers, In those days, it was usually done by the junior most crew.
(n) There is a school of thought that ISI operatives reached the airport & handed over the guns past security to the passengers, using diplomatic immunity, however in their attempt to protect the ISI - the maker forgot the facts.
(o) The lady editor of a prominent Media house is shown as calling her uncle, the joint secretary of RAW - to tell him that IC-814 has been hijacked- an hour after it happened, where the IB head is also sitting having tea. Little did the makers realise that they had already shown the Pilot Squawking the International Hijack code (7500) [ see 18-22 min into Ep 1], which would have automatically got transmitted to all nearby airports in the region Varanasi first then LKO, BCAS HQ, AAI HQ, IAC HQ, MOCA, Operations, Police HQ, RAW & IB and the NSA in the Crisis Management Group (CMG) that had met (including RAW). No intelligence network needed an Editors Bhatiji to tell them, unless one wanted to depict Indian spooks as fools, if that be true, then we may as well rely on Kitty parties for our intelligence.
(p) The A-300 B2 (MSN 36) did NOT have any Fuel Jettison valves as shown in the movie with guard switches. In fact, it must be remembered that this aircraft was ancient, and was the 36th ever built by Airbus. I have spoken to pilots (who operated the A-300), There was a marked difference between the first gen A-300 B2 and the second gen A-300 B2/ B4 - as per the opinions of Pilots who flew the A-300 of that vintage. (see comparitive images)
(q) It is a blatant exaggeration to show that Capt Devi Sharan opened up Fuel Jettison valves in the Engineer station, because in my opinion they did NOT Exist on the Original Aircraft, nor did He do anything to the fuel. 4 other published versions record the facts differently. (I am happy to be corrected) [ See images of Both Cockpit panels from Airbus]
(r) The Credit must actually go to the Flight Engineer Mr Jaggia, who had made it impossible for the Bowser Fuel Valve to connect with the nozzle, at kandahar, by releasing a screw.
(S) In fact the depiction that Capt Sharan, Capt Rajender Kumar & FE Mr.Anil Jaggia seated in the cockpit all the time, is also incorrect. The Hijackers seated them in seat 10 C, 10 D, 10 E in the Economy Class through out the siege in Kandahar.
(T) The Business Class was occupied by the Hijackers themselves. When they needed to communicate on RT, they brought either the PIC or the FO to the Cockpit.
(U) The Pilot in Command, NEVER repaired any toilet flush valves, and in fact, to the best of my enquiries with a few people, he did NOT EVEN GO TO THE HOLD ! In fact The PIC's own interviews given post the event, and to TV media including NatGeo, contradict a lot of what is in the Netflix series, and that is shocking.
(V) It was in fact the Flight Engineer who was taken to the Hold once to retrieve some bag.
It is a fact that all the Cockpit crew have admitted on TV interviews & debrief, that the hijackers themselves went to the hold, and one day came up with a bag full of grenades and guns, and there was Bullets on the Cockpit Central Pedestal.
(W) No phone calls were made to any Crew/Air Hostesses home by any Hijackers Iridium Satellite phone. This is another tactic to show the Hijackers as humane, when they were terrorists.
(x) It was FALLACIOUS & paradoxical to show a PAKISTANI security guard inside the DUBAI MILITARY AIR BASE, preaching Quranic scriptures to the HuM terrorists. An Arab Military Air base, will not/did not have an armed security personell of another nationality.
(y) No foreign passenger from Business class was put to the rear economy class near the toilets. All Pax were seated in the mid economy, and 9 Indians and 1 Foreigner (with a Rudraksha) was sitting in Business class. (to be sacrificed). Satnam Singh & Ripan were amongst them and got assaulted. The Movie has once again distorted facts.
(z) The Hijackers used Indian code names, but it was clear that they were trained ISI agents.
The Hijackers names were given up by the 4 ISI terrorists picked up in Mumbai – 1. Bhola. – mistry zahoor ibrahim 2. Burger – sunny ahmed qazi 3. Doctor – shahid akhtar shahid 4. Shankar – shakir 5. Chief – ibrahim athar - Also wore a RED CAP - (which the movie never shows)
6. What the series DOES NOT TALK about is
(a) That there was Intelligence that Pakistan was upto No good & had planned something
(b) That all crew and passengers went through an Intelligence Bureau debrief on New Years day 2000- a lot of what is stated in the Movie has been debunked during those briefings.
(c) That all the crew met with the PM at his residence the next day, post the IB interrogation/ debrief and expressed thanks that the Government had intervened to release them
(d) That ALL the passengers were BLINDFOLDED through out the flight, and were made to place their heads down through out the siege. None of that is shown
(e) That the Hijackers were rude & nasty, and threatened death time & again to the passengers, but also played good cop & bad cop. This too has not been shown.
(f) That the Hijackers were drawn to some of the ladies and attempted to befriend them. One even spoke of his fascination for Bengali ladies.
(g) That at 7:20 pm on 24/12/99 Amritsar ATC got a strange call from someone claiming to be J.Lal from MHA Delhi, ordering that the "stalled" refuelling be completed asap. Mulekar (Airport Manager) ordered fuelling immediately & told Birdi, yet when Birdi called the CMG in Delhi, they had no J.Lal in the Home ministry.
That number was later traced to some missing ladies cellphone, who did not live at the registered address. It showed the sophisticated planning and set up of the terrorists. India would face that same terror again 9 years later on 26-11 in Mumbai.
(h) That a 140 tonne Airbus 300 on final approach on a Lahore highway, barely 300 feet above, cannot do a 180 degrees turn in mid air, in minutes & then land on a parallel runway (as depicted in the movie). The Aircraft is likely to break up.
(i) That at the Al-Minhad airbase, the controller talking to the Hijackers & Crew, was a suave Arab named Abdullah, who had come in on the suggestion of the US Consul & Sheikh Maktoum.
(j) That it was Abdullah, who negotiated the release of women & children, in return for fuel & food, on the insistence of Jaswant Singh via Strobe Talbott & Crown Prince Sheikh Al Maktoum. No - Abdullah was NOT A PAKISTANI as shown in the movie.
(h) That at Dubai, the hijackers had got prepared to ditch the Aircraft in the sea & had taken lifevests with them.
(i) That for the moment that "Red-Cap" / Chief left them alone for a few min, Flt Enggr Jaggia hatched a plan to emit a false engine fire warning on take off roll & Sharan would pull the thrust reversers & abort take off at 120 knots. That Abdullah at Dubai airport was also briefed on this plan & was to keep medical n emergency trucks ready.
(j) That FE Anil Jaggia was allowed to deplane and take a walk around the aircraft with Chief- Red-Cap to inspect the aircraft.
(k) That it was at that moment that Flight Engineer Anil Jaggia set the refuelling panel in such a manner, that only a trained Flight engineer or an AME could refuel the aircraft after this. Fuel calibrations would automatically not be accepted.
(l) That the hijackers beat & abused the hostages whilst on board. This was told to Minister Sharad Yadav who flew to Dubai to greet the released hostages (women, Children & Injured).
(m) That at Kandahar, the refuelling was not happening, because Flight Engineer had obstructed the system. The Taliban engineer was struggling to refuel, & fuel was overflowing out - due to closed valves. Capt Devi Sharan had not touched them, nor did he have a clue as to what Nangia had done, nor did the hijackers. (both Sharan & Rajendra were seated in the economy class when this was happening).
(n) The Original Aircraft VT-EDW (MSN-36) is Not in Jordan as a training aircraft, but was scrapped in Mumbai in 2003.
(o) The Air Hostess Indrani was never slapped, it was the Purser Sateesh who got hit by the hijackers.
(p) The body of Rupin Katyal was shirtless, and was actually lifted by Anil Sharma & Sateesh and taken off the aircraft at Dubai.
There are many more inaccuracies / fallacies and I could go on and on. However, the point is cinematic license should not be used to DISTORT HISTORY.
There has to be some norms, which make it clear to the public that this is a Cinematic depiction of fictitious events and not the factual version. It has spread hate, and made India a mockery of the world.
It has also greatly disturbed the families, and some hostages & Crew, that should never be allowed.

So, I commented on @tuckercarlson interview with @pnjaban Harmeet Dhillon about her own dubious links with Khalistani forces. That brought the entire Khalistani media cell scurrying to defend Ms.Dhillon from getting painted as a Khalistani sympathizer in @realDonaldTrump eyes.
2) Naturally, Trump is a friend of India, and thus I find it necessary to place some more facts so the Indian American public, American Hindus and Indians across the world know the truth about Harmeet Dhillon as well, in the hope that President Trump also knows that its the tail thats wagging the tiger.
3) Before proceeding, It is important to place on record the fact that not only is Ms.Dhillon pro-Khalistani, her team is also rabidly Anti-Hindu Anti-Modi unless she responds and disavows her Khalistani links.
4) However if Ms Dhillon does say that she doesn’t support Khalistan or the terr0ri1sts who b0mb*d Air India 182, and which had 86 children (amongst 329 pax) and my entire family, I’m happy to take back my words.

11) But are we all aware of Ms. Dhillon’s links with Khalistani elements? of her whitewashing the “Plumber terr0r1st Hardeep Singh Nijjar”? of Her closeness with other pro-Khalistan people?
12) As stated above She is Anti-Hindu, Anti-Sanatani, Anti-India and Anti-Modi and that is evident by scanning her various social media posts- you don’t even need me to post screenshots. The thread will expose it all.
13) Her Anti-Hindu law partner J.P.S.Deol also supports the Khalistan terr0r. What is the background of her associates like Pritpal Singh or Preeti Patel other than being Anti-India, Pro Khalistan and supporting movements against India/ Hindus, or who are the “Sikh fighters” she refers to actually are??
16) First and foremost, she came out in support of the pro-Khalistani elements and Canadian government over allegations against India in Khalistani terr0rist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murd*r case.
17) On 19th September 2023, a day after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of killing Nijjar, Dhillon quoted Canadian opposition leader Pierre Poilievre who supported Trudeau in attacking India.
18) Dhillon wrote, “Canada’s conservative leader joins other Canadian officials in condemning the extrajudicial murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Good to see them unite against this shocking act.” Notably, at that time, Trudeau did not provide any evidence to support his allegations and the Canadian government has yet to provide any substantial evidence against India on the Nijjar case.
19) This was at a time when Neither Dhillon nor @JustinTrudeau or @PierrePoilievre could explain Why and How was the “Canadian plumber on the US NO FLY LIST AND CANADIAN NO FLY LIST FROM 2018/19 UNTIL HIS DEATH ? ( Photo of No-Fly List )
