There are lots of questions, frustration, judgement, and name calling going around about masking so I just wanted to share some things I’ve learned as a person who’s been masking since April of 2020 🧵
And of course, if this doesn’t appeal to you, feel free to scroll on by 🍃
In 2020 the US gov said we should mask but then immediately said masks didn’t work. They shoulda stfu but they didn’t, so now we’re here with a bunch of misinformation and harmful dialogue. I’m not interested in debating anyone in bad faith, I’m just sharing what I’ve learned 🥰
1. I do not enjoy wearing a mask! It fucks up my makeup, tough to communicate with people who are hard of hearing, they’re expensive, etc. but I also don’t enjoy labor, wearing a seatbelt, having to engage with society while on my period and whatever else so what’s a lil mask
2. I do enjoy what I *dont* have to deal with bc I wear a mask.
I do really like not getting covid often, I like being able to protect myself from air pollution as well, and I don’t be getting random colds and things either so that’s nice too! It’s the trade off i suppose
3. Masks are more effective when they’re worn.
First step is to put one on. Carrying it around in my bag and thinking I can assess the danger is how I got Covid for the first time 😂
4. I do take my mask off indoors & I’ve grown indifferent with the risk of eating out specifically.
Getting dressed and eating is one of my fave things to do. I gave up team sport, choir, volunteer work, theater for covid safety but yall won’t take my dinner rezzy from me sry
5. I have many lines of defense- Covixyl nasal spray, cpc mouthwash, blis k-12 lozenges AND a @flo_mask respirator ESPECIALLY for superspreader events.
It’s a privilege to wear a $90 mask. I understand that isn’t attainable for everyone, but the investment was worth it to me.
^^^ I do this routine for airport travel, conventions etc and I’ve been good so far. If I know there’s a circumstance where I will not be wearing a mask (bc I’m eating or something) I still take the other steps like the nasal spray and such. I’d rather have something than nothing
This is a masking thread but I do believe in layering mitigations so please feel free to comb through this info on nasal sprays! Do research!
Many people don’t like that I wear a mask still. I get questioned by my own doctor, dentist, sales clerks and bankers. When you wear a mask you are a social pariah but the other maskers see you and appreciate you. That’s who I do it for tbh
7. Not all masks are made equally but again, masking is more effective than not masking. I started 2020 with a cloth mask, upgraded to KN95, then moved to the 3M Aura particulate N95 for heavy duty (and now the Flo!)
Finding a good mask you actually like is a journey
8. A lovely benefit of masking is accessibility. By masking, you’re making space for the vulnerable and immunocompromised. You’re making sure MORE of us have a chance to live our lives. Disabled people deserve fun and safety too, you don’t have to pull the ladder up behind you.
9. Don’t be too hard on yourself, but you do have to be accountable.
I try not to let guilt or frustration overtake me, but they do drive me to at least try to make better choices. And there’s not always a reward. Sometimes it still goes wrong. Many maskers still get covid. 🥲
10. Overall, this has turned my life on its head. My friendships changed, priorities changed, and I’ve mourned the coachellas I would’ve gone to if not for Covid. I wish we were kinder to each other. I wish we had REAL help. In the meantime I gotta be gentle and keep trying. 🙏🏾
Shoutout to PPEtoheros for this!!! bracers help with the fit, and the mask fit is really important. I mentioned my many masks for different occasions:
I worded this incorrectly! I do take my masks off indoors TO EAT once every few months, namely when I go to a work convention or something with a few people I’ve taken it off. I don’t eat out everyday and don’t take it off if im not eating or drinking.
For all my cuties going to PAX East, this is a thread of preparations and precautions I’m taking in order to have a good time and go home as healthy as possible 💪🏾
I am MASKIN UP BABES! My community got me a @flo_mask and I’m super excited to try it out in the wild. I’ll mostly wear this reusable mask but in case you need any disposables, I will also have 3m aura n95s on hand at the con 😷💕
It’s not too late to start masking, ESPECIALLY on planes, in airports, in convention centers and other places thousands of people will be present. Masking NOW can help with prevention of bringing Covid to the con. I am also staying my ass at home so I show up Covid free. 🤞🏾
