As much of a way we’d like to see Women’s Football as something that is progressive and move in. The treatment of players, mostly POC (Persons/People Of Colour) do not reflect this progressiveness. And, today I will give you an insight of Racism that effects Women’s Football.
Disclaimer‼️: If you perceive this thread as negative and happen to be offended about this post. This post definitely was for you and that’s why I posted it. This a post to educate you. And, hopefully football will become a better place, and a better representation for POC.
Racism is not an individual ideology. It’s not and never will be a black and white concept, which is what many of you think it is. It’s an entire system of behaviours, ideas, practices, conditions, structures, and policies that maintain racial advantage.
What are the different types of Racism and How do they impact Women’s Football?
Individual Racism is Personal prejudice. This is usually done consciously and it’s the most common racism, not in WOSO, but in general. This is usually done directly as well.
Here are examples of Individual Racism in Women’s Football:

Institutionalised Racism or also known as Systemic racism. This is discrimination based on race through political, economic or legal institutions and system. So, institutions like hospitals, schools, the law, work place and etc.
Examples of Institutionalised Racism:

The lack of diversity in Women’s Football shows that there is a systematic issue when it comes to POC in Women’s Football. Every system and institution has been built not by white people but on white people, making it harder for POC to be in these type of environments.
Beth Mead’s comment was quite triggering to many. It isn’t a coincidence that most of the lionesses are white. The system is built for white people to succeed, due to the upper hand they’ve had. This comment was pure ignorance. Institutions need to do better to uplift diversity.
An example of how do better, is what Lauren James, Chelsea/England player is doing and providing Scholarships for WOC, so they can get the opportunity to be in the position she’s in and representation is there as it’s important. It’s significant to see yourself in your dreams. Image
Everyday Racism/Racial Microagressions are common, everyday language, behavioural or environmental slights, intentional or unintentional, that may be negative towards a certain race or culture etc.
Examples of Racial Microagressions:
When the commentators love to refer to Lauren James as someone who needs to “control her temper” or “act right” along the lines off. But, when her white counterparts do it, a funny comment is thrown to them.
Commentators we hear you.
More examples of Racial Microagressions:

Racial Microaggressions are the ones with the racial undertones whether you see it or not and whether it was your intention or not. This is the most common form of racism in Women’s Football.
Linking to this is conscious and unconscious racial bias, a big thing in WOSO, mostly unconscious. Racial bias is when you favour a race over another race and then you add concious and unconscious to your definition.
The main example you can give is the Katie McCabe and Lauren James argument. Katie McCabe is the most carded player in the WSL, aswell as known to be aggressive. However, when she does the comments tend to be lenient and funny.

But, when LJ is the littlest bit of aggressive the comment section would like this:

Last new vocabulary “White Saviour Complex” an ideology that a white person acts upon from a position of superiority to rescue a POC. It stands in the way of dealing the real issues with racism. Stop using Racism as a one up and if you’re going to call out racism, educate.
“Not everything is about race” commonly said by white individuals here. it is. Like who do you think set the system up? White people are the ones that set this racial system up. I hope this thread was able to teach you more about the concept of racism and ways to spot it. Ty :)
