Paul has been talking to the Romans about the conflict between our sinful nature and God’s design for us. He said Christ was the answer to this problem. He also said that Jesus’ suffering has paved the way for future glory for us. Now in Romans 8:24-30 he states that God has plans for us that don’t always match our plans. We have to make sure our desires match up with God’s plans and that’s not always easy.
We’re not God so we don’t always know what’s in our best interest in the long run. But vs 26 says God’s Spirit helps us gain that understanding. The Spirit prays for us when we don’t know what to pray for. The Spirit leads us and guides us—when we submit and allow Him to.
And vs 28 is crucial to grasp. Things don’t always go the way we would like. We can be disappointed by events that take place. But God has a master plan and He always works things out for HIS good and HIS glory (and for our good) in the long run.
Sometimes we can’t see it in the moment but this is a promise.
As I look back on my life some of the biggest disappointments-like not getting drafted to the NFL or getting fired—have turned out to be the biggest blessings.
Paul is saying that in difficult times we have to persevere and trust God.
