Ted Williams was batting .400 coming into the last two games of the season, a doubleheader. His coach asked him to sit those games out so he could keep his historic average. He declined and proceeded to go 6-8 in that doubleheader and raised his average .406
By modern standards, Ted Williams batting average in 1941 would have been 0.413. Up until 1953, sacrifice fly counted against batters. Williams had eight sac flies in 1941.
