I am gravely concerned. John Rustad is saying he will direct police to ignore federal gun laws in British Columbia. He’s playing politics with public safety. 1/
This isn’t about hunting. The laws he wants to ignore restrict the kinds of guns that are used in violent crimes, like semi-automatic assault rifles (including AR-15-style weapons) and freeze handgun sales. 2/ globalnews.ca/news/10171807/…
This sends a shocking message to gangs: Under a John Rustad government, they’ll be able to import and carry these illegal guns with impunity.
It would undermine the ability of police officers to fight gang violence—and it will make their jobs and our communities less safe. 3/
The law he wants to ignore also includes powers to help police seize guns from people with restraining orders against them or who are involved in domestic violence. 5/
This comes after we learned that one of Rustad’s candidates compared these gun safety laws with the internment of Japanese Canadians. This is who he’s listening to on this issue. 6/
At a time when we need to be backing up police and giving them more tools to fight gang violence, John Rustad’s bizarre and dangerous commitment would undermine their work and make our communities less safe.
